Not that my post matters, but the OP coins is the reason I don't venture into silver greeks. The photo has me suspect it is fake too and every expert can say otherwise. But I would always have that gut feeling & lingering doubt as the buyer/collector, so if I was in the market for one, I would wait till another one looked more like an "ancient" to me.
The "style" and "fabric" of the posted coins are so far apart that I personally cannot understand how anyone can even say they both appear genuine. Very harsh opinion but please, please prove me wrong here! Now in MY IGNORANCE I'm convinced the OP's coin is a very crude fake. TO: whomever has this coin in hand. Take out your glass and view the piece using a fluorescent lamp. Are all the lumps of "extra metal" in the design "smooth" or are they "rough" and "granular." If they are smooth, I'd ship the coin to England Pronto!
The comparison is meant to be between obverse dies, not coins. Obviously the coins in post 31 are different. I don't like the fabric of the OP coin at all, at least from that pic, and I don't think a late die state would account for its "fakey" look, and I don't even think the two coins posted are an obverse die match. Expert advice is always good, as long as we remember that experts can be fooled - there are numerous examples in the annals of numismatics. Still, I'm only passing judgment on the pic, not the coin. Perhaps if I saw it in person I might think differently.
I hate to pile on BUT...Anyone who thinks the obverse dies of these two coins is identical should be run over to the eye doctor, Today! I don't have the time to point out all the differences but here is a clue: you can start with the shape/width of the eyebrow.
I agree with Anoob et al, this coin just strikes me the wrong way and doesn't look like a die match. If it were my choice I would not buy it unless it was really cheap. Though I am a Siliquae guy, not a Selecuid guy
I thought I would stay out of this discussion, but I will say this. The two photos dont show a die match. Maybe the wrong photo was posted? While die wear can account for some differences, look at the back of the hair on the portrait and note the distance to the border. Compare it to the other coin and the distance is different.
What's the chance this is in a fake NGC holder? Has the auction house looked on the NGC sight to match the #'s?
I consider this the most important part yet posted. I value Barry's expertise above my own on coins that I have studied and I have no opinion of value on Seleucids so I can accept his opinion BUT when it comes to buying a coin we each need to select one with which we feel comfortable. If you are not comfortable with any coin whoever has blessed it, buy another coin. Heaven knows there are enough of them out there. You must feel good about your coins and someday you may need to feel good enough about them to sell them to someone else as genuine and worth owning. Someone will buy this who feels good about it. That won't be me because I have no interest in any coin of the type/period at the moment.
Wow, what a thread. I'm with the general populace on the coin (just from looking at the pics, I think it could use some cleaning then it would look more like an ancient), just doesn't look right. Though this is a great discussion here, learned a ton.
I just returned to this thread to find I am not alone in my judgement regarding this coin. This makes me feel somewhat better about my ability to come to sensible conclusions.
