Why are the 2016 Dimes such poor quality? Each year the US coins seem to decrease in quality, is it the composition? Excessively warn dies? Etc...
I've found many poorly struck 2016 Philly dimes this year but all well struck Denver coins. But this is par for the course from Philly, always using their dies to death and poor quality control.
I got two quarters, three dimes, three nickels and two cents from the self-checkout last night. All but the cents were 2016-P (Cumberland Gap quarters). I'm in a fairly heavily-populated area (central NC), and it seems like we get new issues in circulation pretty quickly. I haven't noticed any particularly poorly-struck 2016 dimes, but I admit that I haven't been inspecting them very closely for the most part.
I'm in SC, and have received plenty of 2016 coins also....just happened to notice the dimes when I looked through some of the loose change in my bag. I had 3, 2016 Dimes, and each one had "deteriorated die" issues.
That's one ugly dime. Ya shouldda sawed the 1966 dimes when they were new. Lots of them had even less detail than this one.
That's truly sad. 1966 really?? I think that's why I love some of the old Lincolns....i.e. 1960's they had detail
Aren't the main devices lower in relief too? You see this especially with quarters. I like the mini sculpture effect of coins, which was quite apparent with silver coinage. Now our coins just look cheap like the metal they're made of
It has to do with the new way they started creating dies in the 90s I believe although I can't remember the specifics. I'm sure someone will step in and explain it though
