I picked this one up at a recent auction after the coin I was originally after was scooped up by another. It's a first year of issue Antoninianus of "The Common Enemy of Mankind", Caracalla. Caracalla. A.D. 198-217. AR antoninianus (24 mm, 5.35 g, 6 h). Rome, A.D. 215. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, radiate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right / P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P, Jupiter seated left, holding Nike and scepter; at feet to left, eagle standing left, head right. RIC -; BMC -; RSC 277b. Rare bust type for the issue. Lightly toned. Very fine. Please post your coins of Caracalla, and specifically your Antoninianii of his.
Here is a very good paper on the subject of Roman coinage and metal purity in the 3rd century. It talks about how the Antoninianus really messed up the ratio between Aureii and Denarii, along with other interesting details. http://www.academia.edu/3778331/A_p...ew_coin_in_the_reign_of_the_emperor_Caracalla
Nice coin - great portrait! How about a denarius? CARACALLA AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right REVERSE: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P, Pax running left holding branch & scepter Struck at Rome, 211 AD 3.11g, 18mm RIC 184, RSC 190, BMC 4
I have always had a soft spot for these. Yours is lovely. Caracalla Antoninianus Obv:– ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, Radiate, cuirassed bust right, seen half from the back Rev:– VENVS VICTRIX, Venus standing left, holding Victory and spear, shield at side Minted in Rome circa A.D. 215 Reference:– RIC 311 var (Unlisted in RIC with Cuirassed bust, probably in error)
Thanks, this is my first Antoninianus of Caracalla. One thing that stuck out to me with this coin is that he doesn't have his trademark scowl on it, his facial expression seems more pleased or content.
Here's an interesting piece: Ox: M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF Rx: DESTINATO IMPERAT; Lituus, Apex, Bucranium and Simpulum The reverse translates to something like "Destined to be the Imperator". Sounds like something Caracalla would issue.
Also look out for the young busts seen from the front rather then the rear. Caracalla Denarius Obv:– M AVR ANTONINVS CAES, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– SEVERI AVG PII FIL, sacrificial implements Minted in Rome. A.D. 196 Reference:– BMCRE 186 has matching bust type though not illustrated. RIC 4 (though bust from front rather than the more usual rear). RSC 587.
A more typical scowler.. Caracalla Antoninianus Obv:– ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– P M TR P XX COS IIII P P, Sol standing left, raising right hand and holding whip in left Minted in Rome. Reference:– RIC 293e.
Great OP coin. I like the bust look too. Caracalla (198 - 217 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, , radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P, Pluto seated left, extending right hand, holding vertical scepter in left; at his feet to left, Cerberus seated left, turning his three heads right. Rome 20mm 5.2g RIC IV 261c; RSC III 299a; BMCRE V 124
CARACALLA AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP CAE MAVR ANT AVG P TR P - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right REVERSE: FIDES PVBLICA – Fides standing right, holding corn ears and fruit dish Struck at Rome, 198 AD 3.0g, 18mm RIC 24a, C 82 CARACALLA AR Denarius OBVERSE: M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF, bare-headed, draped bust right REVERSE: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Caracalla standing left, holding baton and sceptre; trophy to right Struck at Rome, 196-8 AD 2.9g, 17mm RIC 13a CARACALLA AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: PONTIF TRP VIIII COS II, Mars in military dress standing left leaning on shield holding reversed spear Struck at Rome, 206 AD 3.43g , 19mm RIC 83
LOVE the OP @Magnus Maximus !!! Super posts one and all!!! One of my most recent purchases, not an Ant but a denarius with the Mars reverse:
That's a really nice sensitive portrait of Caracalla. Here's one of my favourites, fresh from the honeymoon with Plautilla.
