Worth the risk?

A non-coin collector is selling what he says is an 1861 type 3 gold dollar. It is not certified. From this pic, can you see if anything is obviously wrong with it? I'm not a gold collector, so I wouldn't know what to look for.

This is the best pic he sent me. I'm going to ask for some better ones.

    Worth the risk?

Whats the price? I wanna see the other side, but I don't see anything obviously fake

$250 is the asking price. I couldn't get the reverse pic to save for some reason, but I've replied back asking for better pics.

Eh, seems high for raw. I've gotten nice raw for $150-$175

I would err on the side of caution and go for a slabbed/graded one if you are really hot for a $1 gold.

Not worth the risk. It looks possibly cleaned with AU details. Like others said, you can do better and have it slabbed, although you'll have to do a little searching for the right one. Going to a show would be best

I can't really tell if it's real from that photo. I've gotten caught on these but the bad ones I see are usually type one.

If it is a $3.00 piece than Yes it is worth it. But if it is a $1 piece than NO

Did you have a look at the coin? Who's selling a $3 gold coin for $250?

TOO high a price for $1 raw gold.

Honestly when I first read it, I thought he said $3 gold coin. The $3 gold looks almost identical to this, by the way.

That's very true only 3 times larger with a bigger hole in the plastic case by the way. :grumpy:

A $3 gold is significantly larger. I am wondering why people post here when they can't tell the difference...
