I have two really good condition steel pennies I wanted to take to ANACS. I was wondering if these were dipped because of their condition. Ill show pictures
They don't look natural at all, especially the one with your fingers all over it! These coins are cheap. Buy one in a slab. Even a MS-63 should have original color an luster. There are lots of plated steel cents out there and after you at least examine a few in slabs you'll easily tell the difference.
@Insider has the right idea. For what you'd pay to have ANACS certify this one, you can find one already in plastic. And this one looks funky to me. Color is way off.
Not dipped but probably cleaned. Not worth the price to submit. You can buy one already graded for less.
And if it wasn't cleaned before it might have to be now. Zinc is even more reactive to skin oils than copper is. Why are you handling it with your bare hand?
Neither coin is worth anywhere near what it would cost to have slabbed. The second shows clear wear on the high points.
Me too ive come to the conclusion that they are both plated, i thought dipped was where they dip it in new metal but im stupid
Not stupid... just less informed than those of us who have been at this a LONG time. experience can't happen in a day...
In 1965 or so my neighbor introduced my brother and myself to coin collecting. He had small glass bottles with pop off plastic lids which were organized by year; they included 1943 Lincolns he had had replated. Very flashy and they definitely were admired by this boy. Thanks for reminding me of those early coin collecting years. Fond memories.
