NGC won't cross ANACS coins you would have to crack them out and send them in raw. Edit: You can actually send them in the holders with the waiver and they will crack them out for you.
Nothing to check out, they only do crossovers for PCGS coins. From their website: "Review of PCGS-holdered coins for NGC certification. Coins will be removed from their holders only if they can be graded at the same grade or higher than your specified minimum grade. Specify ?ANY? as the minimum grade to have your coin crossed regardless of grade. Specify ?DETAILS? to cross coins with detrimental surface conditions. You may not request a higher minimum grade than is on the current holder. Non-PCGS-holdered coins must be removed from their holders and submitted raw."
Do you know why? IMO, it gets one more of their competitor's slabs off the market. And for anyone who thinks NCG & PCGS do not wish the other services would disappear...this:
Cus they only want to do cross overs for PCGS lol. I don't know I am guessing a liability issue or something along those lines, maybe cracked to many other holders only to find problems and decided it wasn't worth it. Obviously only they know the real reason
There is no liability issue. If a coin grades up to a TPGS standard, crack it, take the money, and increase the number of YOUR name slabs in the market. See Post#27 care of "they." Here is an interesting bit of trivia. Every once in awhile you could find a "green label" PCI slab with the notation: EXCGS#xxx or EX:NGC#xxx on the label for coins crossed into their slab from the other services. Now your guess is as good as mine why a collector would do that.
In a way it hurts them as you can cross anacs coins to pcgs. I've done it with the old white holder ones
There is a liability issue if you crack a coin thinking it will cross and then saw say a massive rim issue was hidden in the slab and now you have a coin that they will not cross but they cracked. It can happen even though it is would be rare. I was really just taking a guess at some possible reason, I really have no answer for why they only want PCGS ones when it costs them some cross over business. Definitely does cost NGC crossovers as PCGS will allow you to attempt crossovers with any slabs. Then again NGC may just not be worried about it given what a small percentage of their business crossovers are.
Yeah, if the coins in SEGS, ICG, and ANACS (which often cost less) cross to a major service , it would prove in those cases that there just might be other professional numismatists who can also authenticate/grade coins! Forgive the faces...I'm . We need to get some HOT topics going.
No Liability. NGC wants the coins "raw" to avoid that. Now, if we want to bring up coins with rim/edge damage; I assure you (from years of evidence) that there are far, far, far less of these coins in ANACS, ICG, and SEGS slabs than in other services! Thankfully, in more recent times this problem seem to have been fixed.
You need to read what is being written man. You literally just responded with the possible reason I mentioned for why they may not accept other services. IF they were doing actual crossovers their WOULD be that chance. I am the one who told you NGC only takes PCGS in the first place, I am well aware they want them raw......
Thank you! YOUR post#25 was very informative and saved me a phone call. However, since NGC does not do the ACTUAL CROSSOVERS as you so well informed us can we please stop playing if this, if that . IMO, this has just become another case of going off into the woods to bring up non-existent scenarios. Fortunately, I can read. Very often I wish I could not. Oh, I'm not anymore, so a big THANKS!
NGC doesn't do crossovers from services other than PCGS because they got too many complaints from people about their non-PCGS coins not crossing.
Very helpful...case closed. I'll call Scott anyway to see if any change to this policy should be/was considered recently. Inquiring minds want to know.
Very true. I've had more than one anacs or old pci coin upgrade. I actually prefer to buy raw as many people want as much money for second tier slabs as ngc or pcgs. Why I sell in ngc or pcgs. Money I get far more interest and far better prices for those coins. Do I think the other guys get it right too absolutely. But I think they make more mistakes. I also think pcgs and ngc make mistakes. I've seen a lot of problem coins cleaned overgraded and otherwise crap in their slabs I also see coins undergraded too. And they usually don't stay in the slab long unless there's a gold bean on it
ANACS SWH (Small White Holders) actually come in two ownerships. ANA - which has the gold hologram on the reverse - and are strictly graded to ANA standards ANACS was then sold off to Amos Press - which used the same slab for many years, but has a black hologram with two Red or Gold capital As. Initially Amos followed the ANA standards, but eventually slid into market grading... Given gradflation, many of the old ANACS/ANA slabs are even undergraded. The Amos not as much (you can tell the approximate age by the serial #s which range up to 2.4m or even a little higher.
A grader who worked at ANACS and is still in the business has told me he gave up trying to get them to grade by prevailing market standards. Because they did not, it helped open the field to other services run by coin dealers.
