I didn't take the time to carefully choose only my favorite coins, but instead, I picked 12 that jumped out quickly and showcase some of the wonderful themes to be found in Roman Republican Denarii. As I post it, I realized most are Imperatorial. Even snuck in a Social War issue, if you look closely.
I'll take the Vespasian. I wonder if the set was cobbled together in Italy about the time they were excavating Boscoreale.
Lovem all. Social war easy... but what the heck is your top row, #3? And I always wanted the "Vercingetorix" !
I really love the Metellus Scipio with the Sekhmet obverse and the Lepidus with its amazing head of Alexandria.
My favorite "ancient coins" from my collection are....Ptolemaic Rulers of Egypt/ Arsinoe II Philadelphos AV Mnaieion (Oktadrachm) 28mm 28.08g. Alexandria Mint struck under Ptolemy VI/VII 180/120BC. Other eleven to follow, when i get spare time...
Love that Oktadrachm, that is just stunning! It must feel so good in hand. I have been wanting one since I first realized they existed. John
Ehhhh you guys don't need to see my uglies piled into an even bigger trainwreck of uglies, so I won't crap on what is an otherwise nice thread
Thank you! Sextus Pompey, Sicily somewhere. I just bought that coin this week. It comes from a famous collection of exceptional coins of Manuel Vidal Quadras Y Ramón sold in a Bourgey sale in 1913. It is of exquisite style and condition, one of the most beautiful known with a much scarcer left facing bust. I tried to by it a few years back but was outbid. I didn't let it get away this time.
There is few forums and threads on the site where everyone argues and disagrees until some one pulls the fire alarm. I read through the thread and did not find personal insults. Genera insults , perhaps but not rule violating level. You ancient guys should get out more and try reading some other forums, such as bullion vs. fiat, toned vs. bright whities, Carr tokens vs. are they _fill in the blank__, Cents vs. Pennies, Modern mint made rarities vs old time rarities, nit-picking double dies of single squeeze vs. 1955/55 types, women on new dollars, etc. etc. If you read the rules you know to limit how far you go to joke with someone and not insult. Jim
Sextus Pompey (Sicily, Messana) => best coin ever!! Man, Carthago, you have great stuff (I always like your coin-taste) I have a very, very humble example of that beauty and it cost me an arm and two legs, so I can just imagine how much that sweet dawg must have cost!! (money well spent, coin-bro!!) Oh, and here is my sad lil' pound puppy (just an amazing coin type!!) ... my 13th coin-addition
=> whoa-whoa-whoa, big Jim ... you're gonna get yourself kicked-out of this place with a cool attitude like that!!
@ValiantKnight I would appreciate it if you would post your uglies. Some of my best "crap" came from you. (please don't pull the fire alarm,)
