Just curious, are silver certificates still circulating like silver coins or is it mostly just a collector thing now? Can you do the equivalent of coin roll hunting for them buying a bunch of $1 bills at the bank to search? Anyone ever tried? Just got my first one the other day when a friend traded it to me and now I'm slightly hooked on collecting them.
Last one I saw in circulation was before they redesigned the $5 and up notes. There's a slim possibility you might find a $1 silver certificate in circulation, if you handle a lot of money.
Good question, the longevity of paper is so limited that you would have to find a stash of dollars that had been lying around for awhile. I think your chances to get anything out of a bank would be slim, but I am willing to be educated by those here who know MUCH more than me.
I got four $1 silver certificates a couple of years ago, standing in line at an ice cream store with my Son. The kids in front of us spent 'em and we got them from the cashier
ah, okay. So basically unless you're a stripper, bartender, ice cream man, or drug dealer there's a really low chance of finding any for for face value?
My casual impression is that banks actively fish out "old and worn" currency and return it to wherever bills go when they die. A few years back when I was busy searching for silver halves, I remember seeing a bank teller with a thick wad of what looked like older (pre-redesign) bills; I still get a twinge of regret for not asking after them. I assume that there are still plenty of old bills stuffed under mattresses (literally as well as figuratively), and that they'll occasionally get turned in at banks. They're probably harder to spend now that the design has changed. Your best bet might be to make friends with as many tellers as you can, and have them keep their eyes open for you...
I have not seen one since I had a paper route in 1974 The ice cream stand story reminds me of when my sister “borrowed” and spent 3 rolls of my steel pennies.
I've held on to a bunch of them 1934's and 1957's, just to pass them along to my daughter and grand-kids.
Dj, hate to break this to ya, but drug dealers don't sell anything even close to a dollar...maybe a tennis ball from the "dollar" store...can you guess what they would use them for?
Hm... Good question. I've been around that group for a while and you've got me on that one. tennis ball cans full of weed used to be confiscated by the school all the time during locker searches. Tennis balls can pick car locks. or are you using "tennis ball" as a weight slang? Cause in that case you're mixing it up with 8-ball. But this is very beside the point. Lol Trust me, drug dealers get TONS of ones.
Well that's a pretty sad bit of info. Wonder what then happens to all the money at the facility. They better not be burning it
hopefully. I just got a job at one the other day. Pretty high security though. We're surrounded by cameras.
They they see the man coming they use tennis balls with a slice in them to hide their stash and retrieve it later.
