Bid on an item, watched the clock in anticipation till the end, and at the last split second, get outdid and be elated about it? Then the next day, get an offer from the seller to buy the coin at your last bid, because the last guy couldn't pay for it.

I've lost to snipes but never had a "Second Chance" offer.

Not a second chance that I ever wanted to take.

Here on CT, it seems that the OPs situation is always caused by shill bidding.
As an occasional eBay seller, it's happened to me on a few occasions, but never due to shill bidding.
IMO, there's sometimes too much cynicism here,

I, like alot of collectors, collect several series. I have a few that I only want BU coins for, and a few that EF is what I decided on. I also have a few Danscos that I put coins in.
Some are hard to find in any grade so to keep the itch scratched, I will sometimes get a couple easier to find coins for the Dansco, while still searching for the harder ones. I keep to a strict budget so don't, or can't, bid on alot at the same time.
Anyway I had high bids on a couple of coins when a coin that I had been looking for, for months, came up in another auction. I bid on it and was getting beat. I couldn't go higher because I had those bids on the others, so all I could do was set and watch, with the hopes of getting outbid, so I could go higher on the other. If it was a shill bid, he shot himself in the foot.

No, but i would tell the seller no.

    Why?
    You wanted the item.
You decided on a price that you were willing to pay for the item.
    Someone out bid you.
The high bidder couldn't, or wouldn't, pay.
Now you decide you no longer want it at the price you were willing to pay originally?
Are you punishing the seller for something he has no control over?

Because once i get outbid, i consider it a lost opportunity, and most of the time i'll bid on something similar someplace else. It isn't about "punishing" the seller, what am i supposed to do, wait a certain number of days before tying up money someplace else, just in case i get a second chance offer? Besides, the OP said "the next day" in his post, that short amount of time would make me think the higher bidder was a shill.

As a seller, I too have had buyers message me saying please cancel the sale, sorry I cannot pay, etc. I sometimes send second chance offers, but more often than not, they think along the same lines as yall, thinking it "must" be a shill. Oh well, re-list, and wait it out again.

So what? See the question posed in Post #8.

The OP's experience has happened to me on probably a dozen occasions. Each time I was glad I got outbid ALTHOUGH I wanted the item when I bid. Two of those times I received a Second Offer and I took one of them.

This is no longer a problem for me since I have not logged into Ebay for over a month due to the discovery of coin forums. I'm saving lots of money for all the FREE fun posting. :joyful:

I just had a high bidder cancel his bid after 3 days. That's total nonsense. How can EBay allow that. His high bid discourages other bids. Total bs.
I guess I should be happy, there are other bids.

I've definitely bid in the heat of the moment, been outbid and felt relief. After really thinking about it, I would consider a second chance offer but would not say the purchase would be assured. I've never been offered that second chance.

Most of the time it's a shill bidder. I was watching a well known shiller centseles or whatever his moniker is, and he had 3 shill accounts that had 99% of their bids on his own stuff.

Nobody buys hundreds of different coins from the same person on Ebay... It doesn't hold water.

a dilemma for sure. it happened to me a couple times. it seemed very strange to me so I passed on it. I can understand it from a sellers point of view. you never know if it was from shill bidding or not ?. there were a couple times this happened and I was glad I was outbid because the bidding went for way more than I actually wanted to pay. it all depends on how badly I wanted the coin ??? not bad enough and it did not feel right. There have been other coins I paid way more because of rarity or not being available on the market. it all depends on the coin you are going after.

A valid argument. I hadn't thought of it that way.

Was bidding on 8 different 1971 topps baseball cards-mostly$3-10 range. I lost the first seven but had the high bid on the eighth. I'm thinking please, please someone outbid me so I don't have to pay 3.50 s/h on a $3 card. With two seconds left someone bailed me out. whew....

Second chance offers often are used by sellers who are shilling, but of course they have legitimate sellers who use it as well. Sometimes a seller may have two of one item. Sometimes a winning bidder may not pay, for whatever reason. I think this all comes down to Know Your Seller. Have they been on ebay long? Are they a real coin dealer? Got a shop? Coins are a product that attract all types of buyers/sellers.
It's very rare for me to bid on ebay but when I do, I decide the absolute most I'm willing to pay, and that's what I bid. I don't try to place last minute bids, I find it's best for me to bid once then move on. Often I'll purchase the item for less than my maximum bid. And if I'm outbid I'm not remorseful since I made my best effort.
I guess I'm not a good sniper lol

You are the high bidder on an item at $100 and you have a max bid of $150 on it. At the last moment someone bids say $170. Your bid goes to your max but they are the high bid at $160. Then they back out an you get a second chance at your max $150 bid. Sure you are willing to pay that much, but if it hadn't been for the welshing bidder you would have gotten it for $100. If he hadn't welshed the seller wouldn't have ever seen that $150 bid. Why should I be punished for something I had no control over? I'm not punishing the seller, the guy that pulled his bid is. I had the high bid at $100 before someone that had no intention of paying showed my high bid to the seller. Why should I have to honor a bid that should never have been executed?
