I hope you send it to NGC. If there was ever a coin that needed a second opinion, that one is it.

Pcgs sucks a lot of the time. My last order was ok tho they graded a couple short I'm still trying to get a straight one on my 1880 trade dollar was an old white anacs proof 64 that they've bagged twice for questionable color

That just goes to show you that they are afraid and unsure of their graders abilities. After all, once it leaves, they guarantee the grade on the holder. My guess is they have been burned a few times and would rather body bag something that is not a dead solid coin to more or less eliminate a chance of it coming back down the road.

This. They're more worried about the bottom line than numismatics, these days.

Funny, that's when I threw in the towel. Just shows, you rock their boat, they don't give a hoot who you are, you go Jackson.

Heck, that's what I call a true conspiracy theory ;-) If they'd really work that way, and somebody would talk about it, they'll lose 90% of their customer base and their reputation. So no, they sure don't work that way.

Just to play devil's advocate: who would know for sure besides people who work for those "well known national dealers"? And what incentive would they have to talk about it?

I don't actually believe the conspiracy theory. Hanlon's razor ("never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence") comes closer to what I think is the correct explanation. I don't think PCGS is incompetent, but I do think it's more likely that PCGS graders are flat out wrong a good percentage of the time, and perform inconsistently a certain percentage of the time.

    Disgruntled ex-employee...?
    Whistleblower?
    Someone who needs attention?
Someone who lost money with coins?
    ...

Do I have to continue? ;-)

Let this opinion go in one ear and out the other as it is just a technicality reserved for a Grading 101 Seminar that most of you are WAY beyond:

Good eye! The shiny spots you see on the coin ARE places where the frosty luster of the coin's original surface is no longer present. However, this type of disturbed original surface (shiny) is NOT CONSIDERED "friction rub" which is the "bad" kind of actual friction wear that is "dull" in color. Many call it stacking or compression rub and is insignificant on a coin as "gem" and well preserved as this one.

Actually, while it still is "pristine looking" and a very high grade, it is no longer in the original condition when it left the dies. You are correct, it is not rub. See distinction above.

Again, what I have learned is that cabinet friction is "dull" and microscopically hairlined. Bag Friction may be a better description as when coins "hit" each other they tend to leave the surface shiny and obliterate the original frost.

Sorry! :shame: I've got a VERY BAD HABIT of thinking I'm at the beginning of a thread WHEN THERE ARE ALREADY 6 pages written.:facepalm::shame:

I've met Julian and seen his raw personally "graded" coins and as far as I can tell he's using the 100 scale and then pasting the number into a 70 scale.

If the third coin would grade if resubmitted, why doesn't he just resubmit it?

I was one of the first members there. It was never the same when Mark left. When he was banned for the second time, it was rare for me to post there. He was always the voice of reason and always there to help if he could. We got to chat for a few at the last Fun Show. Wish he posted here.

Julian has dozens of coins that are priced up to 5 times their value. He claims they are this or were that... My theory is he sold these to clients who tried to submit them and got disappointed, so as a way to appease them, he took them back on consignment in order to, (ahem), stand by his product.
