1971-D Lincoln Cent

I don't know where that coin came from, but compared to yours, it appears to have twice the luster. us, I have no idea how it got a 66. Here is a more typical 66.

I bought 2 briefcases full of 2x2'd cents ranging from the late 50's to mid 70's but figured these were available in gem condition by the roll.

Was I wrong about that?

 

Not if the coins we're seeing here are typical.

 

The TPGs give a lot of credit to luster and seem to overlook the hits. Maybe too much at times.

 

I think you're misreading my pictures, that's my fault and why I included those angled shots that give a better idea of the extreme luster my coin has. Let's see your 1971-D. You can't compare a 74 to one. It's a MUCH harder issue, akin to the 24-S Wheat. Most of the coins are spotted, poorly struck and beat-up.

 

Most collectors and dealers ignore the Memorial series. Apparently why and odd issue like the 1971-D being a tough coin is not generally known. Show us your 1971-D....in fact, EVERYONE show us yours and lets see how it stacks up.

 

Not mine, but from Heritage. I did not realize (and still don't believe) that spotting and nick being common to a date translated to a boost in grade. To me, nicks and spots affect all dates the same.

 

My first thought was MS-66. This is precisely why I stay away from top pop moderns.

 

Yes, 1971-D is a terrible year for Lincoln quality, but the hands down worst one is 1983.

I'd say 66, but my interest in moderns is low.

 

I agree with 66. It's very nice for a 66 with a nice even strike but the services count bag marks.

Oddly enough it doesn't look like a mint set coin.

These often come with booming luster and mint set coins often have sharp strikes but marking is an issue for the date.

 

Who you are has much weight when coins are sent in for grading.

 

I'm that new guy again. I have a bunch of Lincoln's but I have never seen such beautiful ones' WOW!. Also I had never noticed that the statue of Lincoln shows
in the Memorial. It got me to look a little closer at mine and apparently mine do
not! show the statue.????

 

Here's the one in my dansco thad. It looks really good but I suck at photographing red lincolns though.

Seems mine was heavily clashed at some point with wicked polishing lines on the obverse & reverse to a lesser degree. Also, seems they missed some clash marks above the memorial.

There's also a strange sideways U threadlike impression in the middle of lincolns head between the upper ear & eye.

I'm shocked that the second one linked was even graded since it looks like it has coin wrapper scrapes at the left base of the bust.

But then, nothing PCGS does anymore surprises me. Nothing.

 

Is that one of yours? Jack was a good friend and a member of our local club; I've been wanting to get my hands on one of his coins for a while now. I really want one of his dollars though.

 

Nope, just showing what a 67 looks like. I always think it's good to discuss the Memorial series since it's not given much interest or respect IMHO. It's also interesting to hear others opinions based on photos. I also think it's educational with respect to how PCGS views the series.

Any rate, I'm not hear to claim I have the magic "dime on a penny". If I didn't want to get the consensus, I would have not posted. It's ALL good!

 

1983 is rough too...bubble city. The Denver's were better, I found this roll searching, real frosty luster :
