I recall one of those 2006 Coins, can't remember which of the three it was that sold for $4,800 at the height of the hype phase for these coins.

I also remember COUNTLESS folks on the PCGS Message Boards which turned their snobby noses up at the set because both the Proof and the Burnished Coin were available individually from the US Mint.

This three coin set has had some incredibly stamina on the resale market for a product with a 250,000 mintage limit which sold for $100 out of he gate!
Today they STILL command $300 raw.

I could only "wish" that eveything I purchased from the US Mint had the same stamina over a 10 year stretch!

Since this thread was about the mintage of the 2016 gold mercs I thought I'd mention that there's a recent coin news article out stating that there will be less than 125k final mintage of the gold mercs available. Apparently the damaged ones coming back will not be remade or replaced. How many had problems is yet to be known.

spot on. Well said. and who is to say they could not have made it the same diameter even if it is gold? I get it that they wanted the weight, but size could have been the same.
none the less, I like the coin. Would love to get one for $205. : ( Who knows, maybe in time.

I think they just wanted a round number for the weight. Marketing sounds better when you can say 1/10th of an ounce of gold as opposed to .112 or .109 or whatever it would have been.

That said I think if given the choice most people would have voted to make it the same size

They made it 1/10th because it,s considered a bullion coin, easy figure out it,s true spot value in your head.

They considered making it 1/10 and the same size as the dime but the coin was too thin and had striking problems.

Bullion at the equivalent of more than $2,000 per ounce.

If you expect an entity to sell you a crafted piece of gold for scrap gold value and throw in packaging for free and expect no profit for doing so.
Otherwise your proclamation is completely unrealistic.

You are 100% correct. But maybe the Mint prices were a little on the high side...I still believe prices will drop a bit in the not too distant future as they have on many of the modern bullion coins, then some of us on a tighter budget might pick one up.

No disagreement from me that they were on the high side. I was hoping for below 200 at least.

It has too many negatives going for it. Wrong size, omitting the detail of the original dime it was to replicate and over pricing for a one tenth ounce gold coin. The mint must think we are as dumb as they are. I'm not sure this is a sound buy unless it gets close to spot. It's turning itself into just a bullion piece.

They sold them all basically, they couldn't care less about the after market once they get paid

I think it just has too many negative people commenting on it. The same arguments get re-hashed every day by people who didn't get one while I haven't heard a single complaint from anybody that did get one. I think there's a lot of wishful thinking going on. Maybe you guys can find someone willing to sell it to you for melt. I hope you do.

While your point over over negativity is valid, there certainly have been a good number of people on all forums who did get them that have complained about the lack of FB and the finning issue among other things.

No one likes to comment about something that shows poor judgement or ends up being a poor investment on their part. I had one purchased and actually cancelled the order. I'll tell you what I will do. Six months from now, you sell me yours for melt if it is worth less then when you bought it. I'll pay you twice the price if it is selling for more. No judgement against you, just speculation about the product.

You could and should have kept.. sold for a nice profit, then re-bought when they are going for below issue price. Dumb to cancel a purchase on something that is a guaranteed profit if you sell right away.

Who would determine what the price was? There's always some DA willing to give something away. I would never offer to sell one for less than $300 personally. Maybe more. I really don't care what they do. Mine were purchased for collecting purposes. Not as an investment,to speculate or bet with. Even if I win, I would rather have the product than your $400.

I purchased 12 of the 1916-1945 silver circulated originals yesterday. It is so nice to look at the good old stuff, used in commerce, a bit worn, but served their purpose very well.

The 2016 gold version is certainly nice to have, but I passed on buying one. The high mintage proof is bullion with no connection to its circulating silver predecessor except for design and marking its centennial.

I don't expect any entity to sell me gold for melt value. That would be unrealistic.

But paying the equivalent of $2,200 per ounce for a glorified bullion coin isn't realistic either.

One-tenth American eagles can be had for the equivalent of $1,470 at a major gold dealer near me.

As someone else said, the Mint must think I'm as dumb as they are.
