I am thinking about submitting some coins for grading to one of the major TPGs and was wondering what you all think about these Morgan Toners? If you please, what do you think they will grade? Thanks for your opinions.
I grade them sweet....... truly nice looking Morgan dollars. At this hour and those blazing colors I be lost trying to give a number grade. But they are sweet .
I predict the bottom one would be at least a 65, but I am no expert; might want to wait for others opinions
Grade is completely irrelevant. These would price based on their color, not their grade, and as such would require the legitimacy of a slab to prove their originality and realize their whole value upon resale. The number on the slab really won't matter to those who would want to buy them.
I worry about the originality of the toning on some of those coins. Morgan Dollars usually display bag toning which presents as a progression of rainbow colors and the toning is usually just on one side of the coin. These coins with the exception of the first display a color scheme (blue-violet-orange) that is very prominent on artificially toned coins and are toned on both sides of the coin. That said, I absolutely love the obverse toning on the 1881-S and the reverse although somewhat questionable, might actually pass muster with the TPGs. The surfaces look to be gem grade so that one is worth submission. The next coin (1884-O) also has good toning correspondence from the obverse to reverse and the color is not too over the top. It looks MS63-4ish to me and might be worth grading if the luster is as good as it appears in the reverse photo. The last two coins have what I would consider extremely questionable toning with lower grade surfaces or luster than the first 3 coins. I don't think they have any chance at grading at either PCGS or NGC. The toning on the first coin actually reminds me of what you see on an album toned Jefferson War Nickel. I don't ever recall seeing a Morgan Dollar with target toning in pastel shades of lime green and pink. I really have no idea what a TPG would say about that toning pattern. I am leaning towards thinking they would deem the coin market acceptable and I would grade the coin MS65. Paul
Nice looking coins, but I agree with the above post that the last two for sure will probably not pass, look very A/T.
The obv, of the 85 ,and both the obv,and rev, of the 86 does look questionable . I believe the rev of the 85 is natural. As for the 79 ,81 and 84 I have no issues .
Can,t really tell as nice toning hides detail, but I,ll guess at 65, 64, 65, 64, and 65. Toning looks over-done on last 4 coins. They probably grade a point less if not enhanced. They picked common dates for experimental enhancement, not so risky an investment that way. Many will jump at these if left ungraded.
I would agree with Paul. I think that they are dubious at being market acceptable. The first coin might well pass as acceptable, and is closest to a natural toning pattern. The others all appear to me to be "enhanced" artificially by some technique--I would guess that they have been gassed or chemically treated. Those colors are too vivid, lacking any natural progression--they are immediately intense on the devices, and natural toning like that rarely happens. The most obvious examples are coins 4 and 5, which seem from the photographs to be overly saturated in areas with no progression to that saturation. That isn't natural bag toning, or textile toning, Grade is irrelevant, as I doubt that PCGS or NGC would grade any of them--they would QT the entire lot. They are very pretty coins, but should be treated as art objects, as opposed to naturally occurring examples of toning. Don't waste any money grading them, as they will come back body bagged with regard to color. They are pretty, so enjoy them as curiosities. #1 is the possible exception to that rule--the greens are somewhat gradual, though I still have my doubts. If that graded, it would be a 65.
Great coins and images. I bet they all grade except the last one. It's pretty clear that the toning is artificial. The obverse spot at 9 o'clock on the obverse near the rim is the dead giveaway for me.
Agreed but #3 looks like it might grade as well as 1 however if submitted with the rest they will probably all get body bagged
The Blue looks awfully artificial in #3. I was considering that one also, but don't see it being classified as NT.
Do you really think they have a chance? I respect your expertise a lot. They look awfully suspicious to me. If they did straight grade, they would be moon money for sure. I would say your grades are about right, though I would call the bottom one 65, if they were not bagged for QT.
1 and3 no problem. 2&4 50/50 5 very unlikely. I wouldn't want them all on the same submission as they may think you're doctoring them. Mix a couple at a time with other coins
That's why I love you guys! Pretty darn good observations! I have to admit, I lied. I have already submitted them and gotten the grades. 1 of them was in an old PCI 64 holder and now resides in a PCGS 64 holder. The other 4 were raw to begin with. 1 graded MS62, which I was very surprised, 1 came back UNC Details Questionable toning and 2 came back AU Details Questionable Toning. Now, let's see you line them up with the correct results. PS - The pictures are PCGS True views.
It is obvious which ones graded. I am surprised that two graded. I would have expected only that one to have done so.
