I check Fed Ex on the ebay screen. Cost and a declared value would be less than a dollar more expensive than USPS and insurance. Plus a private business has to be easier to work with than a quasi governmental group.

I hope you don't need to make a claim on that insurance.

For that amount of value, I would use USPS First Class insured for the full amount. Much less expensive than Registered, and I've never had anything lost. After shipping literally thousands of packages by USPS over the years, I think I had to file a claim maybe once. Don't be so paranoid.

I've never died, but I still keep up the premiums on my life insurance.

The sense I got from that article was that they make special arrangements with certain high-volume customers (think "US Mint" or "NGC") to provide coverage, but small customers are still unprotected. The last time I looked, which was within the last year, their posted policies specifically excluded collectible coins.

I'd be very interested in seeing a posted policy that says they're covered now -- policies do change, and I do occasionally want to ship higher-value items.

    From current terms

A I see it Sec 8.1 1 allows for the shipping of collectible coins, and sec 18.1 allows for the purchase of insurance coverage. Sec 18.4 collectible items should make coin eligible for the insurance coverage.

This section of the declared value for carriage for items of extraordinary value limits the coverage to $1,000.

Try Insure Post (formerly Shipsurance) or Shipsaver to privately insure your package at a cheaper rate than USPS; the total cost is about $5. Don't use eBay insurance as it doesn't cover coins.

My experience is that for a minimal amount of money, I can insure the coin privately under $2500 for significantly less than the cost of Registered Mail.

Also eBay buyers can be a pain, and I have had some complain about Registered Mail. I had one whine to me on day 4 or 5 when a Registered Mail package had not arrived. He had the tracking number so he could verify it was shipped. It was almost as if he expected me to magically intervene and travel across country to find the stupid package!
