Just picked up this toned 1954 Roosevelt Dime last week, and while I was imaging it I noticed something strange happening on ol' FDR's nose. Thought I'd share the images and see if we could reach a consensus as to what's going on. My thinking is that it's a die break, causing the line on the bridge of his nose to be much weaker than normal, the eyebrow to be much larger than normal, and creating the extra glob of metal seen in the photos. Full coin: Closeup of the bridge of the nose: Here are some observations: The coin appears uncirculated in hand The area in question does not appear to have been caused by damage (PMD)
A die break would be raised on the coin. If the mark is a depression it is either a stuck thru or a hit. If it is a hit , it could be a scrape that went all the way up to the eye and pushed up metal there also. The rounded blob over the eye looks like a raised "die chip."
The anomoly on the nose appears to be the result of a die clash. Back in the 60's, some of these were sold as Bandaid Noses.
I agree do the over lay and you'll see the olive leaf and olive that makes it up. Nice coin I like it, my birth year too.
Don't see anything on either new post or how a clash could make the rounded blob on the eyebrow that looks like a die break. Interesting coin.
