soooo, I stopped in my usual pick up bank and said "about time to order a couple more boxes." and they said they had 6 bags of Ikes in the vault. I said I'll take all of them. Whew!! just carrying them to the car is a workout. Been through the first 3 and... well... pretty disappointing. 1 bi-cent p v1 really beat up 1 s bi-cent copper clad v1 60 or better that's it. No silver. pretty lean. hope the other 3 get better.
A bank had 6000 Ikes in the vault! Wow! I wonder if they were dumped buy another CRH'r. Hope your luck gets better, happy hunting! When you go to get rid of 'em try spending them... everywhere. You'd be amazed at poeple's reactions and the conversations this provokes! A lot of people under 40 have never seen one. Tighten your belt though, they weigh heavy in your pockets!
I do spend some but that's a LOT to carry and spend. Not everyone is happy to see them. Got through the rest of them, still no silver, found 3x 1973-D (clad of course) and one better grade Bi-Cent P v1. That's it. not exactly great for $6k. But, since these were out of the loop of being carted from bank to bank by others CRSearchers, I though I'd order at my regular bank again. Sometimes they can get a bag or 2. They came through with another $6k !! So started with those, I've done the first bag and found a 1880-O Morgan in AU, maybe even 61 condition. Nice one. also a silver plated 72 ; (.. and a Bi-Cent P v1 in AU or better, and a Bi-Cent S proof clad v2. Almost half this bag was AU or better and probably 25% is 60 or better. Really nice quality. all in all a better bag.
@softmentor Congrats on the pickup! Any suggests on getting Ikes? I was successful once a few months ago and now every time they order Ikes they end up with small dollars. Even after verifying with the person when ordering them. Thye keep trying but just get shafted... Hoping for some insight
Finding a bank that can order is tough. I live in NJ about 20 miles from Philadelphia and no luck. Anyone know of a bank in the area please message me.
I brought it up to my vault teller and she was very dismissive but the seed is planted. Another teller supervisor said they might be able to request them, which of course they can. If there's some available. I'm going to let it sit for a couple weeks then bring it back up.
I think you just have to win favor with a great teller/manager and have them keep trying. I would try once and then if they don't have any to send you, wait 2 to 4 months and try again. They can order them, but the company that handles their coin orders (Brinks, Guardia or whoever) may not have them in stock and may not want to order them from the Federal Reserve branch. It may also help to try a couple of different banks that use different services. So if a bank that uses Brinks can't get them, try a bank with another service. I got a big order 2 years ago, then it was more than a year before another order filled, and 5 months since my previous one. To get 2 orders close together like I just got is very unusual. Also watch the for sale section here at CT, I will put up some bargains soon if you want some. Probably next week sometime.
It's been over a month since I started this thread by posting my first $1000 bag. I have a proven source that is willing and able to get them and I'm still waiting for another bag, seems as though they're just not always readily available in large quantities.
My teller exchanges them for cash, bags 'em in a sealed coin bag and sends them to their coin processing center for verification. It's actually a pretty easy transaction except, if the count isn't verified in agreement with mine, my account gets charged the difference. This has been a problem a few times. I spend as many as I can but that's only good for small transactions It would be a much bigger problem for me if I could just get them more often!
