Put me in the 55 camp, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's in a Mint State holder. I just can't reconcile the flatness of the talons with the level of weak-strike evidence elsewhere on the reverse.

image.jpeg They were brutal on this one. Pics do not do it justice. Tons of luster and great originality I had it as 55 being very conservative and hoped for 58

Tons of luster? No. I think there is just enough luster to possibly justify an AU-53, like I said. The strike and level of detail should have brought it up.

You have to be careful with 1825's, 1826's, & 1831's. Those particular years the strikes were often HAMMERED. I understand that this coin has mid-AU luster, and probably should have graded higher, but the deep strike, particularly on the obverse, can fool lots of people into thinking you're looking at an MS coin or close to it, when it fact you're looking at a very well struck AU.

    You nailed it !

I had my doubts when I saw your guess.
I thought "he knows this series how can he be so far off?":jawdrop:

Personally I think it's a 53 or 55, but I know how PCGS grades. And over the past month, they tightened up again.

Also, for those who thought it was an UNC, look at the newest pic in the holder. The luster is around the stars and date, etc, but the luster doesn't stretch into the fields towards the portrait, like it would on a MS example. Still, it is a wonderful coin, and they didn't do it justice IMO.

Yeah there's no way this coin is an unc. Theres obvious light high point wear. I thought 55 is the right grade. I have a 1821 in pcgs 53 that's nowhere this clean. And I think that one is accurately graded There's a lot more luster than the pics show having the coin in hand is a lot better than my not so great photography too I felt pcgs was a grade low on almost every coin I sent. But they didn't napalm anything for a bs details grade. The one they detailed deserved it I was just hoping for a pass on some old toned over scratches

I completely missed the grading prophecy, but nice coin in any case! My guess as I went through the thread was AU something, but that's pretty easy to say now...

Fab 62, Maybe a 63? These were not struck, but were pressed by a very large screw with a crew of 3 persons, one at the helm and two on the screw. On many coins, the detail was not completely pressed into the planchet, this result sometimes appears as ware.

Yeah, but that does not explain the loss of luster in most of the fields and the discoloration of the high spots, which is caused by wear. This coin has been circulated, an therefore should NOT be MS.

Brutally undergraded. Not MS, but AU50? Please.

I am just as guilty of grading it MS 62. Now that I read your insights, I have learned more about this series production techniques. Gosh, the learning never ends even after 27+ years of coin collecting.

No, my comment was just frustration over people posting guesses after the results had already been posted. I was in a mood. My dog is dying and my kids misbehave and the post office lost a coin. I got hit with the trifecta of bad luck this weekend. My apologies.

Actually there were a couple of 1814s struck in platinum.
    From the Russell Logan sale.
