PCGS charges a 1% guarantee fee on all coins with a minimum of $5.00 per coin. If the value of your coin is high, then this fee can become quite expensive..

I'm having that dilemma now. I will more than likely never come across a raw Morgan this nice for the price I paid no matter what year it is.

That it would be.. I just about fell over when the dealer showed it to me. Good thing I'm a poker player and can put up a heck of a poker face. The dealer gave me the deal I got, because he wanted to save money on the grading fees.... All I could think was I don't care how much it costs to grade..

Beautiful CC... can't believe it hasn't been certified yet. I'd give it a very solid MS67 that wouldn't look out of place with a +.

In order not to incriminate myself, I shall plead the 65th... ;):D

On the web site and submission form, it only says that applies to rarities (over $100K value), crossovers, and reconsiderations. PCGS guide for a 68 is "only" $70k. No guarantee fee for you! :)

It's not that I was disagreeing with the original attribution - too much argued in favor - just that it's a complex VAM in terms of die states and the fact that they *all* appear to have the line in the wing doesn't mean they all actually do. We need to be always on the lookout for potential additions to the knowledge base. I haven't had time since you posted this to do any in-depth looking, but I'm interested in where this one falls in the strike progression. I have one more shift and the weekend off, and in between playing with my new lenses I'm going to seek out as many imaged examples of the VAM-5 series with an interest to find out about that right reverse star.

I cannot_quite reach 68 for it, as much as I'd like to, but if they give it a 66 I believe it'd get a Gold Bean. It's one of the nicest raw Morgans I've ever seen posted in a forum, and I've seen....a lot of them. :)

@SuperDave I knew you were not disagreeing on the VAM-5a attribution. I just wanted to give you a better image that showed the die scratch you mentioned. Also the starburst at the wing tip is very weak on this particular coin. And thanks for your compliment on the coin. I can hardly wait to hear back on the grading.

First, I want to say that my VAM-5A in an NGC MS64 (unattributed) doesn't hold a candle to yours. Kudos to you!

Second, I seem to recall that it was mentioned on VW several years ago that not all of the 5A's have the starburst on the tip of the eagle's wing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Whenever I have the opportunity, I tell people not to get excited about the rarity numbers in the VAM listings. Most current ones are estimates that use R-5 as a baseline. The numbers never get updated, partially because it's difficult and partially because you'd never know by looking if the number was an estimate or researched. Also, a VAM can have only one or two known, but with no widespread demand for it, there may be no market premium. I may sound repetitive doing this, but if it keeps someone from paying a premium on a coin just because someone writes "R-5!!!!!!!!!!" on a 2x2 or eBay title, I'll keep doing it.

Thanks for the info @messydesk. I know none of the '83-CC VAM's seem to command a premium. In fact a lot of the high grade '83-CC's I looked at on Heritage and PCGS Coin Facts seem to be from the VAM-5 family.

I posted this coin over on the PCGS boards. They are one hell of a tough crowd. I'm getting anywhere from "UNC Details/Improperly Cleaned" to "MS65+ couldn't get a 66 on a good/bad day"..

I don't mind people giving opinions, but it's like a contest to see who can give the most disparaging opinion while looking down their nose at you..

On the plus side. She is all packaged up and I'm about to go drop her off at the PO to send her on her journey.
