I just verified it on VAMworld. It is a VAM-5A. Thanks Paul...

Too bad it wasn't one of the major VAM's that PCGS would recognize.

But it is an R5 never the less.

You could always send it to @messydesk and get a VAMSlab sticker. :)

There's a grading quandary with high grade morgans. Where's the line that says one decent hit with all else relativly clean is different than no noticeable hits or gouges but a couple small ones. That coin I'm guessing was so clean the grader saw it as a solid 68 if not for that one big but not that big gouge in an area that really isn't center of the focal area. It's kinda hidden to the eye by the jaw line somewhat. Plus of Heritage was the subitter it got a favorable graders eye. Some say that doesn't happen but that's hogwash imo. I tend to stay away from high grade coins in current holders on Heritage as rule of thumb personally.

I may do that. I will also have to send it to CAC once it gets back from PCGS.

I can get that. But that is one HUGE hit. I would have put her at 66+ or 67 for that large of a gouge personally.

If so, I would like to know where the wing die scratch visible on all 5A's has gone.

Seriously; it has many of the VAM-5 general attributes, but doesn't appear to have that scratch which they supposedly all have even into the much later C & D die states. The die cracks - accurate to VAM-5 where they're seen - seem to be insufficiently developed as well, but that could be hidden in the lighting. And all that business going on around the right reverse star seems anomalous for the VAM.

    I can't imagine this coin not receiving a 67.

I think it's lost in the lighting as well. Several of the photos on VAMWorld don't show it well, either, and the die polish over the eagle's shoulder is a dead on match for VAM-5A.

    I hope it does well for you. Pcgs has 67 at $3900 67+ at 15k and 68 At $70k. A pop of 191 in 67 15 in + and 6 in 68

The die scratch is there. It was the second pickup I checked. Here is a more detailed shot of the wing and the eagles beak.

I see what you're saying but maybe the strike is quite nice with this puppy. It really stands out. And luckily that bag mark is out of the front field and cheek, but it's still a mark very obvious to the naked eye. I would've gave it 66 or 66 plus tops

Thanks @Mainebill I'd probably have a heart attack if it came back a 68. The guarantee fee on that alone would make the grading fees insane!!

Yeah true. But it'd be a home run and a half. This is about the cleanest cc Morgan I ever seen

Lord, you can't sell this coin, no matter how it grades. Or can you? A dilemma on the horizon, albeit a nice one.:woot:

Me I could and would sell it especially if it went 67+ or 68. And I'd buy coins I love more. Now if it was a monster toner 67 that's different
