Call me crazy but I actually prefer Peace dollars over Morgans.

I like Peace dollars better, too.

    But...

The Lady Liberty from the Morgan would kick the Peace dollar versions butt to next Tuesday and back based on her thick neck. Unless Peace had some martial arts training...

I hated Morgans and couldn't understand the appeal of them for the longest time. Then for whatever reason I bought one. Then I bought a lot. Then I dedicated time to writing a thread about grading them.

However, at the end of the day I can still look at myself in the mirror and proudly proclaim Peace Dollars are better.

I'll still take a nice red penny over them all.

I do not have time or money to do what I want with coins and bullion, much less have time to diss what others like. Granted, Morgans are overrated, in my opinion but I still try and gather an occasional coin. Hoping your thread goes well for you anyway. John D

I don't mind the Morgans but I prefer Peace Dollars myself. The thing I like about Morgans is they remind me of the Old West.

Something there is about the mass of a Crown-sized coin, in hand, which cannot be duplicated. It says, "I am intended to carry the heaviest load of commerce," whether that is true in life or not. They call lesser coins "minors" for a reason. The same is true of a Crown or a Thaler or a 5 Franc or a Spanish Real de a ocha....they are their issuer's biggest and best, the theoretical pinnacle of their coinage.

I've always felt the Morgan to be that "pinnacle" of US coinage, whether it was a desired unit of commerce upon mintage or not. What more complex design was ever executed by the US in such numbers, in such wide variance of quality, time and location as to make multiple subspecialties still a substantial task in terms of quantity? Its' sheer availability is why it enjoys such popularity today as to justify "haters" (I don't use that as an insult; haters mean all the more for me :) ) who think of it the same as many Americans did when it circulated.

Each to his own. I like Crowns and Thalers as well; many of them are exquisitely artistic by comparison to the Morgan. But Morgans are within reach, and I cannot say that of any other pre-20th-Century "major" coin.

I'll give you this - that is a lovely coin. Maybe if they all looked like that... [emoji6]

I've never been a Morgan fan at all. I get tired of seeing that same coin a million times in every thread, and clogging up the coin section on ebay. The design isn't great, it doesn't have as much historical significance to me because people didn't really use them that much. So even after collecting coins seriously for a few years, I haven't bought one.

Recently I started working on a 19th and 20th century type set. So I obviously need one. I went to the coin shop with the idea that I would just buy a cheap AU example that's close to bullion price. I spent some time digging through the cheap ones, then I decided that I should probably look through the case of BU examples. But the scuffed up cheek really kept bothering me.

I ended up looking through the actual Morgan case where the legit coins are. I quickly found that I did like quite a few of them, but I'll be saving up for a while. So I guess I get it. It's still not my favorite design, but playing with them in hand, I can definitely see the appeal.

Nice prologue. And I say that because it has all the earmarks of an early budding morgan enthusiast. I'll check back with you in a year when you're morgan dansco is halfway complete ;)

While I do love Morgans, it's particularly the beautiful toning that truly gets me. Also, the ability to easy find a variety of examples (to find the highest quality example for a grade) is, at least to me, desirable.

Also, someone had mentioned that there isn't much history to them compared to other 19th century series. I personally disagree. While most did not go on the type of journey's that other 19th century coinage went on, given the general lack of circulation, there still was plenty of history related to the series.

That said, I can understand why someone could get tired of them. There definitely are a LOT of them out there. That said, I just can't see how someone can look at, for example, the below and not have their heart skip a beat. :angelic:

I agree, the Morgans do have the look of the 1800's and the Peace dollars have a Art Deco look to them.

Easy...it's such an ugly obverse design that even great toning can't help it.

Shame, too, because I do like the eagle reverse.

You Morgan loathers have to stop bashing the hot school mom...I think maybe Anna and George were getting busy. "In total, Morgan had five sittings with Williams; he declared her profile to be the most perfect he had seen."
