No. As an American, I lived and worked in Germany about 20 years ago. I worked with Americans and Germans. We were in Germany, so "any" excuse to stop work and get a beer via the beer halls, pubs, bars, restaurant or brotzeit, was good enough for us. Obviously, the Germans knew where all the best places were. Whenever our group (10 or 15 guys) would end up at one of these places, the first two words out of someone mouth would be "Pfennig check". If you couldn't pull out a Pfennig from your pocket or wallet and show the group, guess what? YOU were buying the first round. To this day, I still carry that Pfennig you see about in my wallet. Needless to say, the new guys to the group always paid the price.
Hehe, good one. Maybe that is the true reason why some people around here still oppose the idea of getting rid of the 1 and 2 cent coins.
Historical facts, Theodore was famous for being a high ranking knight in the Teutonic Order. He fought the Polish/Lithuanian Armies in the Battle of Tannenburg in 1410.
Here is a photo I took yesterday, of a 1674 German States Mecklenburg Strelitz Silver Schilling 1/48th Reichsthaler Adolf Friedrich IV - Obverse Crowned AF monogram V.G.G.H.Z.M. (Von Gottes Gnaden Herzog Zu Mecklenburg) (By the grace of God Duke of Mecklenburg) 1764 https://www.flickr.com/photos/lawrence_chard/26219023192/in/photostream/
Have already posted in the newly acquired thread but it also needs to be here. Top PCGS grade for DeepCameo. Mintage nº: Unkown
Beautifull piece! Kaiser looks very regal. Unfortunately, Germany(States) did not produce nice coins after Kaisers abdication. From 1500-1800 (German States) produced a massive amount of AV/AR coinage/ some of the most magnificent examples in history.
Yup from 1918 onwards things went downhill really fast. This piece closes my set of 2/3/5 Mark set in Proof. Both the 2 and 5 in PR65DCAM and the 3 Mark in PR64CAM (maybe one day ill find the PR65DCAM and get a slab showcase to put all 3)
I've been looking at the porcelain coins issued in the 1920s. Great stuff, and wonderful workmanship. How is it in hand?
pretty good juster, it's relatively thick at about 5 mm. being porcelain it isn't very heavy for it's size, only about 12.5 g. the obverse is slightly concave and both sides are in pretty high relief. as far as how it looks, I'm not a good coin photographer...but my pic is dead on this time.
It has been a good while since I had time to focus on my German 1 Mark series. This 1903 J fills the spot until I come across a nicer one. 9 coins left out of a 119 coin series 1873-1916. Only 1 (any 1905 F) and possibly 2 (nice 1891 D) are out practical reach for me. Coin is in hand but Sellers photos are better than mine. Thanks Mike
New addition to the set of German States sede vacante medals & talers I am building. Pics are from seller (CNG) - I have not had opportunity to image it yet. 1761 Paderborn - Sede Vacante medal 43 mm; Zepernick 243 Death of Clemens August of Bavaria
Nice 1 Mark coin, Mike with nice toning. I too collect some of the imperial issues, and particularly like the 1 and 1/2 Mark series, specially the 1 Mark bearing the old imperial eagle. I was able to find this 1873 1 mark mintmark C struck at Frankfurt am Main. This coin is relatively difficult to find, specially so with any detail left on the eagle. If you can see a significant part of the cross-hatch design on the eagle's breast you have a VF coin.
