Learned a hard lesson today.

I was trolling on Facebook (yep the beginning of all bad stories these days) and saw someone near me was selling some coins to pay their light bill. I was curious so I messaged them and got some pics of the coins. She told me all she had and sent more pics showing 2 ASEs 2 morgans, a barber, and walking half. Also prolly 20 bucks in ikes or susan bs so I offered a hundred to which she asked if I could do 150 since her bill was that. I met her in the middle for 120 for everything. So she met me at my work that afternoon and handed me a bag with the coins I glanced at them and saw it looked like they were all in there. So I gave her the cash and she left. It went smoothly and I went back to work. Later I got home and went through them to see that the ASEs and the halves were missing. I thought there must be a mistake and I know I shouldve looked through the bag first but I trusted her for something that simple. Well I messaged the lady back online and no response. Anyone have a similar story? Would this count as fraud? Or should I leave it alone and learn a rough lesson.-Stash

Best you could do is report it to your local police department, but it's unlikely they'd do anything over such a low-dollar loss. Sorry.

 

Call the police and tell them.

 

I get the feeling we're not getting the whole story here, and am sure you didn't pay that much for (what you thought and imply was) just two ASEs, two Morgans, and two halves along with $20 in assorted junk, so what all was the lot actually supposed to include?

 

What condition were the Morgans and halves , especially the Barber and were they common dates ? Did you know this lady ? Just curious .

 

your fault for not looking at everything first. sorry. lesson learned the hard way.

 

Never ever buy off Facebook or Craigslist so easy to be set up. Never buy from a stranger ......if it seems to good to be true it isn't .

 

Give us her phone number, we can call her for those coins and have some fun with her ....

Well blow her messages up til it drives her crazy ..

 

You made a firm deal from facebook pictures because?
You still didn't look over the lot when she brought them by because?
You are now complaining because?

 

Because he's big enough to publicize his mistake in the hopes that others don't make the same one.

 

I blow up her Facebook page with messages and post them on her wall .

 

Maybe she just gave you what she thought was worth $120? Lol.
Being what I assume is a middle aged white man, you're just supposed to take the sucker punch to the gut and forget about it. The less fortunate benefited so all is right in the world. . (To some people anyway...)

you trusted a complete stranger?! didn't your momma ever worn you about strangers?? looks like you gotta take the loss, your word against hers now, an she can just say that all the coins were there, so your right, learned the hard way, of course you could get lucky and she turns out to be honest and brings you the other coins.....

Well, given the fact that it was FaceBook, at least you know the name of the person.

I have several friends on FaceBook that simply do not check their "messages" until I post on their walls to "check your messages".

I'd keep sending her messages and if she doesn't respond, just chock up the loss to experience.

 

I have an ad that I run on craigslist and I'm always meeting people to buy stuff and I usually meet them in public areas that's convenient to both of us. I never show the money until I've inspected what they're selling and I always record the transaction with my dvr pen in my shirt pocket.

 

If it were me on the losing end of this transaction, I'd suck it up because it's not worth getting cops involved for a ~$60-70 loss.

 

I've only done 2 Craigslist coin deals in the past. One was similar but turned out well... It was when I just got into silver and morgans before I really knew anything & silver was at around $30oz. Someone who lived somewhat close to me had a morgan silver round listed and wanted $35. I called her and offered $30 and she said she really needed diapers. We struck a deal for me to buy some diapers on the way and trade. I ended up buying her 2 large boxes which was over $40 and wipes as I figured she / her kid really needed them if she was going through all this

 

I was more posting as a warning to others. Even though it was common sense to most. The deal was for 2 morgans, common dates, a nice au walking half, a barber half, 2 ASEs, and 20 in change plus a common seated dime. It was a preventable mistake I know but it was one this young guy will remember. Sorry didn't mean to waste some people's time reading it.

 

I appreciate you posting it. Always helpful to hear and share these stories. We can learn from each other's mistakes as well as our successes. While most people on this site are great I, like you, have encountered some nastiness. Brush it off - nothing we can do for those who think taking shots and using sarcasm is a productive way to live life.
