I never noticed that before, it does look like a clash. Unfortunately I can't take out my loupe and examine it because I sold the coin years ago. I wish I could update the photos in this thread, I have much better examples now compared to when I wrote this.

Can you show an example of a weak strike, full steps nickel?

Or is that an oxymoron? lol

Definitely not an oxymoron, ive seen some NGC and PCGS slabbed nickels on ebay that are graded as ms 66 without full steps.

Ill try to find that picture again.

Here is a good example, this coin is a 1941-D NGC MS67 6FS

Notice that the details of MONTICELLO are incomplete while the steps are razor sharp.

I have a 1968 S Jefferson Nickel and wonder what spectrum it falls into. I'm trying to learn about coins and would love any feedback. I can send you a picture.

I have a 1968 S Jefferson Nickel that looks very defined. I don't know much about coins, just starting to get into them. Would it be possible for me to send you a pic and you give me your opinion? I know that it's hard to give a true assessment through a pic. I'm just looking to get an idea what track to take with this coin.

    I'm guessing it's a mint set coin.

I'm also guessing it's got four nice steps. These do come full steps so it's entirely possible it's FS. There's also the problem with dings on the steps which will eliminate a shot at the designation.

There is a pic of it. I stumbled upon it in change received from store. It seems too good to be true!

I'm using my phone's camera to take the picture. It's not the best quality, but it does show the coin pretty well for a phone camera. Plus I don't have the best lighting. Just curious about some opinions on it.

It looks to be a circulated proof coin. The devices including Monticello appear to be frosted.

What is the date and mint mark? I'm guessing S Mint

    It
It is 1968. And you are correct on the S mint mark

Yeah, it looks like a proof coin to me and as such, is not graded by the steps as all of the proof coins are struck multiple times and this gives the steps a complete and uninterrupted strike on most coins.

Up close it doesn't look frosted, there are miniscule scrapes and scratches, possibly from circulation. From pockets and registers. I got it from a gas station. For curiosities sake, if it were real, approx what would it be worth?

Just because a proof came in a mint set doesn't mean it couldn't have been spent at a gas station. Hes saying its real but it's likely just a proof coin that ended up in circulation.
