Another year has gone by ALREADY!!!

Well, my less than perfect example of the 'Rape of the Sabines' seems appropriate.

Two excellent representative coins Gentlemen! Very nice!

I was going to do a big write up on the founding and thought that it would had been too much. Just post some of your cool Roman coins, and let's enjoy the show!

    Awesome coin Mikey!

Have you read Mary Beard's SPQR? She has quite an interesting chapter about that episode in Roman history.

I haven't read 'SPQR that I can recall (I've 'reread' books I can't recall LOL), but it's another I will shortly...I just took out a few additional books from the library and will continue doing so every couple of weeks. So, please PM me guys with any and all recommendations:)

    Happy Birthday, Rome!

Antoninus Pius celebrated the 900th anniversary of the founding of Rome. As a run up to the celebrations, he issued a series of coins depicting various evocative scenes from the founding myths of Rome.

I'm glad there's an annual reason for me to show these two coins. I count them amongst my favourites :).

    image.jpeg
ANTONINUS PIUS, AE As. 11.02g, 28.6mm. RIC 733.
Aeneas was a Trojan hero who escaped the fall of Troy. He journeyed with his followers to Latium, where a divine dream led him to found a new settlement at a site where he came across a white sow suckling her young by a river under an oak tree. On his way, he had a little fling with Dido, founder and queen of Carthage, whom he subsequently abandoned. It's perhaps no surprise then that when Aeneas's descendants went on found Rome that there would be a little bit of bad blood between the two great powers.

    image.jpeg
ANTONINUS PIUS, AE As. 11.34g, 27.8mm. RIC 694a.
This one shows the parental units of Romulus and Remus about to discuss some family planning. Rhea Silvia was a vestal virgin, daughter of Numitor, the King of Alba Longa, and a descendant of Aeneas. Mars was the Roman god of war.

The horse is what attracted me to the coin... then I saw the hair details and other details that were struck reasonably well.
