Thanks Book - I could never hold the seller as responsible for the USPS screw up!
He did his best to complete the auction - I will bite the bullet if USPS can't come up with a solution!!

Yes - I do too, But as I asked the post office guy, there has been no returns, I'm hoping the occupants at 2015 Ford road ain't gonna keep them!

If it's close by and you're uncomfortable just walking up and introducing youself, scope the place out first to get a feel for who lives there. The more questionable among us might not think twice about keeping something of value as long as they "think" no one knows they have it, but if you make it known that both you and the post office know where it went, they may think twice even if there's nothing you could do about it.

Years ago I had a job where, if people decided not to come in and pay their bill, we'd knock on their door (which they, of course, didn't answer) and leave official-looking, yet totally meaningless, paperwork suggesting that we were in the process of filing suit against them. Sure, it didn't work all the time and we never did it to someone actually struggling, but oftentimes the hint was enough to get the desired results.

When I said "this" situation, I meant the $30 dollar one. If I am sending a $2,000 coin, I get insurance, register, etc for more seller protection. I do think a seller should be responsible for delivery, so think the seller should probably refund the buyer here if they can't get the package back.

You know the address where it was delivered? Go knock on the door and explain the situation. I'm sure it will be fine... Offer them some duck eggs and you might make some new friends

The postal carrier should ask the household where he delivered the package too and explain his error. I've had this happen before and that's what my postal carrier did and although the package was opened by mistake I did end up getting it back.

Problem is - (I asked my neighbors) This is an old guy who I haven't seen come out of his house this year. Last time I heard from his nosey neighbors his dog died, his wife died, and he has his kid (who is a Lorain county sheriff) do all his yard work - I'm screwed as I don't wan't to start a problem with a law enforcement officer - You can't win on that one!!!

Screw the cop.... if he's the type to play a part in keeping something that doesn't belong to him (or his father in this case), he's also not worthy of being respected as an officer. If the type to use his badge to intimidate, record it and post on YouTube. I'd imagine that, especially in Cleveland, they wouldn't want anymore negative exposure. ;)

I don't know what else to suggest other than, perhaps, dropping of or sending a note explaining the situation and hoping for the best. As long as you're not trying to unjustly nail or punish the seller, I suppose the ball is completely in your court here.

Maybe he's like James Earl Jones from the movie The Sandlot. Everyone's afraid of him but he's got a priceless collection and he's dying for someone to talk to about coins!

Well you do have something going for you... the post office admitted it was scanned and delivered to an exact address. So you know who received the package. I would try and get that info from USPS in writing somehow.

As others have mentioned, it's very possible that the recipient will mark it "wrong address" and turn it back in. If they do that then wouldn't the same mail carrier be the one to receive it? Go talk to the mail carrier and ask if they have gotten it back. If they haven't, perhaps you could then ask them to ask the recipient to give it back. I mean if they messed up then maybe they'd be willing to fix it. Offer to go with them if they'd like.

If the mail carrier is certain he delivered it to the people at 2015 Ford (or whatever it really is :)) and the people at the house say they didn't get it, tell them you don't care if the package has been opened. Let them know you just really want YOUR stuff. Be sure to show them the tracking showing delivered to them (if you get that in hand). If they stick to the we didn't get it mantra then I recommend backing down. You don't really have proof they did get it and it's not worth starting a war over 30 dollars anyway.

If you open a claim for item not received with eBay, let the seller know beforehand and assure them you know it's not their fault and that you are not planning on dinging them with feedback. Try to get eBay to eat the loss. You are going to need the post office's tracking record showing delivered to wrong address however. Without that I wouldn't open a case.

If this was a more expensive item I would probably also suggest filing a police report. For an item of low value though that would be going overboard.

The seller is responsible for it until it's in your hands. If an issue happens during USPS control, the seller needs to compensate you and file a claim with USPS if the package was insured. If it wasn't insured that's on the seller. People forego insurance all the time to save money in the long run.

You can still go and politely talk to them. Just tread lightly and don't lose your cool and you shouldn't have any problems. Who knows, maybe you become friends with this hermit neighbor of yours.

    Yeah - that's what I say - only 30 bucks - I know some people will say 30 DOLLARS?
But I figure (if I can't have it resolved) then just part of trying to collect coins from Ebay - and having the USPS complete the transaction!

That was my initial thought too. Then everyone here started telling OP he's screwed so I thought maybe he is.

I would still try to resolve things myself if I were OP, especially since the package is likely sitting at his neighbors house. If the package doesn't show up open a case.

Everyone is different. If you can live with the loss and you feel it's better to not open a case which would/could cost the seller ultimately then that's your choice. I respect that. I wouldn't want to hurt the seller either if they did their part. The other option is to try and get eBay to eat it. I don't know how you could do that without putting the seller in jeopardy though. Good luck with whatever you do.

  21. Not according to eBay. If tracking shows that it is delivered, the seller has done his part. Case closed. With that said, I am sure some sellers would refund just to avoid a neg.
