So. Anybody else got some 1964 SMS coins they want to share photos of?

(And NO, we don't want to see your 1965-67 SMS coins!)

Don't have it, but almost one a '64 SMS quarter in one of the recent Goldberg auctions. It was PCGS certified as a 1964 SMS (MS65 I believe) and the auction house put it in a box lot with a bunch of other coins assuming it was worth very little like most MS65 SMS coins (from 1965-1967) and obviously no realizing it was a 4-figure coin. I should have been able to get that box lot and that SMS for a steal, but I made the mistake of telling someone about the cherrypick before the auction ended... thought I could trust the person... lesson learned!

The coin was definitely not a normal business strike and it wasn't a proof. Clearly an SMS coin similar to those produced in later years. Would have loved to get that one, especially at a bargain price!!!

Look for THIS ... this "teardrop" shape on the underside of the 4 on every one I've ever seen (and that's four different examples) with a super sharp strike, squared off rims like a proof, and lots of random, crisscrossing die polishing lines on both sides.

Yeah, I heard about that one afterward. Whoever got it flipped it into a Heritage auction. It was lot 3653 in the Heritage Sacramento ANA sale #1153, brought $4,025. I was the underbidder but I dropped out at $3400 plus juice. Nice coin! The five-piece Goldberg lot brought $1323.

I believe I may have one of the 1964 special mint sets. My mother in law ordered this set from the mint. Any one have idea of current value? Will send picture if someone will tell me how to attach picture to forum comments.

the 1964 Special Mint sets were not released by the US Mint. If your Mother In Law ordered a set, it is NOT a 1964 SMS, but more likely a Mint set or a Proof set

Thanks but if not released by the US Mint.........then who did release the 1964 SMS?

Show pictures, maybe it's not an SMS like you think. Like others have said it could be mint set or proof set

What would the differences be to look for in the coins (or pictures) for the 1964 sets to determine if SMS set, mint set or proof set? Although I am thinking this set came from the US Mint, I have also read where only the SMS sets were made by the US mint in 1964 as patterns to be made in 1965 and no mint sets or proof sets were made or issued by the US Mint in 1964.

Again, can you tell me how to attach a picture to a thread on this forum?

Nobody ever "released" them. The '64 SMS sets were a trial run, similar to pattern coins. In other words the mint knew what they were going to do in '65, but they had to test things out, they had to see what the coins would look like. So they made a few sets that had the '64 date on them. Those sets were never supposed to leave the mint. But, as always happens, some did.

Of course none of this was known by anybody except for a handful of people until years later. And eventually some of the coins made their way into the marketplace and then things became known. But even now, today, there are still a lot of people who are not aware that a few '64 SMS coins do exist.

And no doubt, in the future, there will be other coins that were never supposed to see the light of day that surface like the two '74 aluminum cents that surfaced 10 or so years ago.

Basically you, meaning you or I or even most people, can't tell. Even the TPGs can't tell with any degree of real reliability. But to have any coin be accepted as actually being a '64 SMS coin, you have to have either NGC or PCGS slab it as such.

That is not true. There were regular annual Mint Sets and regular annual Proof Sets issued by the mint in 1964. The '64 SMS coins came about as I explained in my previous post.

It's pretty easy and there are several ways to do it. You can read about them here - http://www.cointalk.com/t8565/

Much speculation is that most of them came out of the estate of Eva Adams who was Director of the Mint in 1964.

I think that my IKE Prototype falls into this scenario since all were supposed to be destroyed.

I have a set issued from the Denver mint. They came in a sealed plastic holder in a blue box. The coins were dated 1964 and have a Denver mint mark. The box said they were special mint set so I ordered one set just to find out what they were. I debated whether to order a set because the were more expensive than the proof set's.
