Just to stir the pot on a completely subjective issue, I will suggest that this coin was not worth $3k. It is really important to understand photographing techniques when purchasing toners, and also price histories of toned coins. A more realistic picture of the same coin is below. Still a marvelous coin, but not $3k marvelous. If this was TrueViewed, I'm guessing it would be about halfway between the dealer's photos and the auction photos below. It is also important to know that this coin was previously in a 66FB holder and likely has maxed out at 67+FB (though anything is possible with enough submissions).

As an aside, I can count on one hand the dealers from whom I would buy a coin at this price without seeing it in hand, seeing a TrueView, or reviewing other photographs of the coin . . . .

On a related note to photography, here is an ebay coin a I bought last week. Sellers pic. Literally, as there was no reverse pic.

Stir all you wish, there are alot of coins that are maxed out that are still worth their asking price. If you go back to the other post where I mentioned I was going to make a reasonable offer, one would conclude that I too thought that 2800 (shy of 3k) was to much.

I found the previous auction when I first saw the coin about a week or so ago.The worth of the toning is up to the person paying the bill, there is no right or wrong to the whats its worth, while there is toning you may love and I may dislike and vice versa

I agree with you and do love the toning on this coin. If it was in the $2000 range, perhaps I would've bit.

He posts on an e-mail-based listserv, and doesn't use that handle. Nobody that posts there would know him by it, either.

I have slowly accumulated far too many 43d toners, but bought this guy anyway. It has a perfect strike and the eye appeal of a 68FB. The hits on the chin and cheek are what held this guy down to a 66+FB. 1943D-4.jpg

Picked up this guy at a good price. This may displace the 41 in my collection, haven't decided.

Thanks Ben. You too. I wonder how strong the rainbow thaler market is. I've never slabbed a thaler but this one might just be my first if I can squeeze it in to a future sub

Looks like mint set toning gone bad to me.

While we're stirring the pot, I will say I like the coin in these pictures better than the previous set of pictures.
