This thread: Make your "remember whens" to show what coin collecting in the past was like. Here's a quick one to start up: Remember when the TPGs wouldn't even slab a damaged coin, and would just send it back in a bodybag?
Remember when the state quarters first came out? I sure don't, because I was only three years old and not yet cognizant of what money was. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Remember when you could grind the edge of a pre-82 penny and it would register as a dime in a vending machine? I DO NOT CONDONE THIS, IT IS COUNTERFEITING AND IT IS ILLEGAL.
Remember when all dimes , quarters and halves were silver . And wheaties where the only coin to be had till they came out with the ugly Memorial cents . I always thought I'd find a 1909-S-VDB in change or on the ground .
Isent that not too long ago, I find the ASEs and Baseball hall of fame coins to be cool, I most especially like the gold coins that look like old coins =)
Yeah , but I'd rather buy a comic for 12 cents than save a Rosie . I did look for better dates from the cents and the few Mercs that you could still find .
I don't think that would be considered counterfeiting . It must be over 30 years that you could put a dime in a vending machine , unless it was one of those coffee machines at work .
Remember when 1976 Type 1 Philly IKE's were $7.50 apiece regardless of condition because of all the hype surrounding the rarity of the 1976 Type 1 Philly IKE's? Come to think of it, remember when 1973-S Silver Proof IKE's were $150 each in OGP?
"Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond. You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom, blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!" Sorry, I just couldn't resist.. I love this song and when I read the title of this thread, this song just popped into my head. To stay on topic. Remember when proof sets held only 1 cent, 1 nickel, 1 dime, 1 quarter and 1 half dollar?
I remember when you could buy the complete Pan-Pacific set in the original copper frame for about $25,000. http://www.pcgs.com/news/happy-birthday-great-panama
As a kid I lived 1 block from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, during the days of Johnny United and Brooks Robinson. I remember when I could stand on the public street and park cars for an event and get paid $2.00. Some days I'd get silver coins. A few time I was handed a silver dollar but that was rare.
