This just arrived at my doorstep today. I have no idea why I bought it except that I really liked it. I do not have a full attribution. The info I have is as follows. Sassanian silver Drachm 632-651 Khusro II Issued under Yazdegerd III Weight 4.11 gr 33 mm Please post your Sassanian coins
Nice addition. Khusro II (591-628 A.D.) AR Drachm O: Bust of King right, crowned and cuirassed, ribbon over right shoulder, crescent and ribbon over left, stars flanking crown, monogram to left. R: Two attendants and fire alter, star and crescent flanking flame. 4.1g 32mm LYW for Rev-Ardashir, Year 33 Khusru I (Anushirwan) (531-579AD) AR Drachm O: Crowned bust right. R: Fire altar flanked by attendants; star and crescent flanking flames. 4.04g 30mm BYSh mint (Bishapur in Iran), dated year 42 (572 A.D.) Gobl SN II/2 Ohrmazd (Hormizd) IV (579-590 A.D.) AR Drachm O: Crowned bust right. R: Fire altar flanked by attendants; star and crescent flanking flames. WYHC mint (Weh-az-Amid-Kavad). Dated RY 3 (582 A.D.) 3.01g 27mm Göbl Type I/1
This is a coin of Khusro II, minted in his own reign. The mint is AWH, for Ohrmazd-Ardashir, and the regnal year is 25, which would date it to about 616/617.
Top down: Khusro II, LYW for Rev-Ardashir, year 33. Khusro I, decade illegible, but ends in '2'. Ohrmazd IV, regnal year is 3, not 11.
WOW @Orfew , that is a nice, well-struck detailed coin! I do NOT collect any Sassanians, but this one would be a first for me to get. His grimace is amazing... it reminded me immediately of BLUTO from Popeye! LOL, your capture is a KABOOM of a coin! I am going to have to go get one like you did, just "because"!
Beautifull Sassanian coins, I find these fascinating. I already had some Kushano-Sassanian/ Hunnic-Imitations...but finally acquired a true Sassanian Empire coin. Its a light weight AV Dinar struck by "Court Mint" circa 477-84AD for Peroz I 22mm 4.14g.
I believe these three kings have not been posted yet. Please let me know if you disagree with the ID's.
Questions - is the Sassanian portrait series of rulers easy to collect? Is there much variety in reverse types - or are they all fire altar flanked by two attendants?
Pretty much have the same reverse. Great article on them and how easy/hard some are. http://www.coinweek.com/featured-ne...-sasanians-persian-coinage-of-late-antiquity/
Interesting read. I find the series appealing because the coins are big and attractive, and the different crowns the rulers wear on the obverses. I guess I'll need to acquire a Sassanian coin at some point - the most attractive one i can find!
Wonderful OP and terrific posts everyone....and Doug's Varhran II is one of the most interesting examples I have yet noticed. I have two examples and only one that is 'nice', which I have posted too many times (Shapur)......
There must have been a group a couple years ago. There were many offered and many, like mine, had very chippy edges. There are about half of the rulers that provide 95% of the coins and a few that are really rare. I do not collect anything by series so it does not bother me but your series will slow down after you get about eight easy ones. On the other hand, it seems like there are hundreds of different Khusru II and all look alike to someone not into the subject.
