I recently acquired a pretty cool Domitian as Caesar denarius. Domitian as Caesar AR Denarius Rome mint, 80 AD RIC T97 (C), BMC T84, RSC 386 Obv: CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS COS VII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS; Salus, stg. r., resting on column, feeding snake out of patera Acquired from Lanz, eBay, March 2016. The Salus feeding snake type was struck for Domitian Caesar under both Vespasian as COS VI and Titus as COS VII. AVG F in the obverse legend indicates this denarius was coined before Vespasian's defication, after which DIVI F was used. This Salus type was unique to Domitan Caesar and was discontinued in the following DIVI F issue when a whole new slate of reverse designs were employed. Not as commonly found as the COS VI version.
Love it 'V' !!! I'm after two of Domitian, one as Caesar (not a Salus reverse) and one as Augustus---both have cool reverses that I am otherwise missing. Hopefully, 'Fortuna' will favor my quest LOL Hope to post them (and another Vespasian or two) in a future post Congrats on the scarcer 'COS' issue !!!!
Thanks Mikey! I hadn't realised until recently I was missing the COS VII version of this type. I just assumed I acquired one years ago and never recorded it properly in my database or online gallery, as it turned out there was nothing to record! $35 later I was able to rectify that. And good luck with your Domitians!
Really nice addition. I for one have no examples from Vespasian/Titus/Domitian....yet. I am working on it!
Nice addition & congrats, David. My favorite snake coin. Hadrian (117 - 138 A.D.) Billon Tetradrachm O: AYT KAI-TPAI AΔPIA CEB, Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. R: L Δ_EK_ATOY Agathodaemon erect right at left, wearing skhent and enfolding caduceus, facing Uraeus erect left at right, wearing disk and horns, enfolding sistrum, their tails knotted together and holding a club erect. Alexandria Mint, 125/126 (Year 10) 10.6g 19.5mm Emmett 804 Dattari 1552; BMC 668; Milne 1164; Curtis 351; Demetrio 1247 The Caluceus refers to Hermanubis, the Sistrum is a symbol for Isis and the Club refers to Harpocrates.
Another nice addition to your stable of scarce Flavians! Congrats. A have only one coin of Salus at the moment, but it's a doozy - denarius of Severus Alexander, with probably the most detailed version of Salus seated that I've seen. It even looks like her seat back is adorned with a second snake...
Terrific posts guys!!! I seem to have a startling lack of Salus/Snake reverses...... I was sure I had a couple WOW!! Both JA and P-man have fantastic examples with incredible details!!
Thanks to you guys/gals, I have found a new source of great fun....these AR Denarius/ants are really neat/ nice designs.....best of all really affordable!
Nice type to have. The kind of reverse that could drive someone to a "Salus reverses" subset, just as others would have a "She-wolf suckling" or a "Diana Lucifera" subset. Nice. I've been eyeing a Salus/snake reverse of Antoninus Pius for a bit. Maybe I'll be posting it here soon.
I don't seem to have photos of any of my Salus/snake coins, but I CAN offer a snake: More worn than most of my coins; best thing about it really is the provenance: ex Sydenham, ex Niggler, ex Finarte 972, ex Benz, ex Rudman (New York Sale III.) Also pictured in Banti.
Nice => that's a sweet OP-Salus addition, V70 (congrats) ... oh, and great additions from the CT-gang as well (very cool coins) Ummm, I also have a couple of Salus & Snake examples ... here they are A-Pius, AE Setsertius Maximinus-I (Thrax), AR Denarius
