Just wondering what some of you seasoned collectors would consider your biggest mistakes when you were new to the hobby. Pay to much, etc.
Sold an Austrian gold ducat several years after buying it in the late 60's because I was short of cash. Steve
Was never into cents, was offered a 1877 for $60 back in 88 I passed, i couldn't figure out why he was urging me to buy it until I got home and looked it up. Went back and it was gone
Im single and cherishing every moment of it by buying coins cause i know it prolly wont last. My biggest mistake wasnt on a coin but i let an original empty New Orleans mint bag for silver dollars get away. I stopped bidding after it got to $300 and i shouldnt have. I love old mint bags and i regret not going all in for it.
I sold a nice 1914 $2 1/2 raw because it had what looked like a pen mark (blue line) on it, and I figured it wouldn't grade. I saw it graded ms63 I believe on eBay, and instead of a couple hundred bucks it was a couple grand. I wish I hadn't seen it again, haha.
I too has missed such. 1877 xf 1c for $50.00; 1909 Mat proof for $50.00, 1923s QT au for $300.00, 1916d vg mer $.10 for $300.00 and some more. What can you say? -D)
I don't even want to talk about the coins I had to sell, to keep the family going in the early years of marriage . Baby aren't cheap ....
For me the biggest thing was buying the cheapest coins I could afford to fill the spots in my album. I don't mind circulated coins but I bought some pretty heavily worn coins when I was starting out because I didn't want to spend too much money. Now though I look back and some of the worn, cleaned coins I bought and wonder what I was thinking.
I've made several but possibly the biggest was in buying 1 each of the following 3 coins: 1 - AU55 CAC'ed 1955 DDO Lincoln 2. 1972 PCGS MS65 Type 2 IKE 3. 1971 PCGS MS66 IKE. All three have lost value since they were purchased with the 1971 probably leading the pack at $3300. The Type 2 comes in a very close 2nd with the 1955 DDO being a major disappointment seeing as how folks always said "buy the classics" instead of moderns. However, the biggest mistake I made was in thinking I could turn a profit by buying coins and reselling them. My success level has been the same as a street racer that drives a Toyota Prius.
My biggest mistake was using my pool winnings from one match to buy a brand new Corvette instead of using it to buy some of the $1,000 bags of Morgan Dollars during the Treasury releases. Chris
You sure you didn't word this backwards? Call me crazy, but youth was not intended to be used up on coins...
