Since this is one of the premier coin forums on the internet with quite a few members, I thought it'd be interesting to have a poll for CT members to see where everybody stands on this new gold mercury dime coming out in 12 days. The poll will last for the 12 days leading up to the sale and then close. You will have to vote to see the answers. I am admittedly excited for the release but there are no right or wrong answers. Doesn't matter if you're a dealer, flipper or a collector. Lets see an honest tally of anonymous opinions. I thought about the questions fairly in-depth and hope that I've covered everything that anybody would want to know. If you won't buy one because it's against your religion, you'll have to forgive me.
I'll likely buy multiples, but I agree that they should have been silver (instead, or in addition). I do understand why that didn't happen, but I still regret it. I'm hoping @dcarr will come through for us.
Im in the never buy anything from the mint group. Why buy anything from the mint when you can spend that money on something old that has a better chance of holding its value.
I'm not a modern collector but was excited about these--until I learned they would not be produced in silver. A no-go for me without reservation.
You liked that one, eh? Don't laugh. Based on reading these forums and comments sections, they're out there! lol
This_specific_issue would be high on my list if I felt it within the budget, but no kind of gold is in the budget. I predicate that answer on the assumption that they will, in fact, be struck with full bands. The lack thereof would be an instant dealbreaker for me.
My real reason for wanting one, or three, is I like gold, and I personally like the coins. I liked the liberty gold coin, but some people hated them. I don't think the mint will EVER produce something that will grow in value, to me its just bullion. The mintages are always to high. It the UHR never grew in value, nothing will. Its not like I want a first lady gold coin YUK, ugliest women I ever saw.
I would have liked them in silver, but then congress would have had to act upon it, and initiate legislation for it. In other words, another commemorative (3 more actually) and the mint is only allowed to produce two commems per year. Ah, the abuses of years gone by come back to haunt us........
Since Congress and the Mint won't do to suit me, I think I will honor the Centennial by buying nice examples of the Mercury, standing Liberty and Walking Liberty. I have none of them in my collection now.
I'll take the 1916 dan Carr overstrikes coming soon over any of these mint offerings any day. Now that he's thinking of overstriking these gold ones too it's just another reason to save my money
I might buy one, or one of the quarter or half ounce coins coming out later this year, if the price is right. (and by right i mean very close to spot, i don't want to pay a huge premium)
Heck, I pulled many out of the change as a kid, but none that were high grade. Good endeavor Santini...........
