Hey everybody! I'm very new to ancients and need a little help here. Yesterday, I bought this rough ancient out of my dealer's world coin box. I figured why not buy it for 15 cents right? I believe it's a Valens but I'm not entirely sure. If anybody can identify this coin for me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Yep, definitely a Valens 364-375 AD GLORIA ROMA-NORVM It is worth maybe a dollar or two, and no use in cleaning it, its to far gone too much corrosion.
dang, 15 cents! I am new to ancients as well, and i do not know much about them, but i do know that 15 cents is a heck of a good deal!
It resembles most I end up with whenever I get my annual itch and buy a few 'uncleaned bronzes'----Very low grade but worth about a buck or so....and I believe @noname is correct.
I'd say for fifteen cents, you still got a bargain. Just to hold that coin and think who's hand might have held it and spent that very same coin almost 1700 years ago. Heck, that experience in itself has got to be worth a buck or two alone right?
Pick as much of it off as you can and nuke it for 15 minutes in an oven. I'd hate to see a 1700 year old piece of history condemned to rot away just because it is "nearly worthless".
SCD => 15 big ones is a great price!! (congrats) Here is my humble Richie Valens example (great song, Garlicus) ... sadly, I paid slightly more than 15 cents, so you win!! (my sorry dawg was closer to $20, delivered)
WOW great purchase! When you think about it with 15 cents you can't even buy a package of handkerchiefs... Here is mine:
Thank you all for your replies and comments! It was a big help! I was quite surprised to find it but glad I did to say the least. Thank you for providing pictures also, really helps when observing my coin.
