ok so this is now my favorite campgate, love those doors....think i'll be adding more of these to my collection... Constantine II, AE3, 325-326, Arles, Officina 3 CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust left VIRTVS-CAESS Campgate with eleven rows, four turrets, open doors with three panels with undetermined number of pellets, star above, top and bottom rows empty blocks TA crescent RL in exergue RIC VII, 294 (C1) on a side note, WildWinds had this listed, not sure if it means anything but it sounds cool... "Although rated C1 in RIC, this Rev. and Mint mark, with this number of campgate rows, has only been reported on one other occasion (ie. Ex Keith Metzer Collection)." i know there was a Campgate thread started a while back, but what about "with doors", anyone else got any to post...
NICE!! ... wow Ken, those are some very sweet doors you've got there!! (congrats) I love campgates with doors ... => hmmm, our Constantine-II examples are quite alike, eh? (very cool) Constantine-I Constantine-II Constantius-II
You had to start a campgate discussion; with doors no less. Love these types and there's a lot of really nice pieces shown. This closed door Constantine I type is the pride of my collection: It may just be by accident but the open door type seem very inviting while the closed door type says "go away". Not sure why they did this.
Ken: that is a wonderful campgate with doors. I only have one with doors and its not exactly in the greatest condition: CONSTANTINE I AE3 Follis OBVERSE: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, Pearl-diademed head right REVERSE: VIRTV-S AVGG, campgate with four turrets, open gates and star above, S F at sides, PCONST in ex. Struck at Arles, 328AD 2.70g, 20mm RIC VII 321.
that's a nice campgate...doors (i dont' have one), and it has many rows of bricks...11? nice! same as stevex's middle coin?
thanks everyone! some awesome examples here.. wow Steve, 12 rows, thats cool...and Brian, love that closed doors with helmeted bust! never seen one of those before.. i like it!
Brian, awesome campgate and a real prize. Wish I had one. I've collected campgates for a number of years, and one of my favorite gates is this one from my collection. There is something a little different about it, can anybody tell what it is. Doug H.
This campgate has 14 levels but no doors CONSTANTINE II AE Follis OBVERSE: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate head right REVERSE: PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, campgate with two turrets, star above, eSIS(double crescent) in ex. Struck at Siscia 328-29 AD 2.9g, 20mm RIC VII 216
Steve, you're close, no head-gear at all. Thats unusual for campgates and I have no ideal why. But it's cool.
I see a lot of camp door specialists here! Although I collect Constantinian coins I do not own a lot camp gates. However, I came across this, I my opinion special, camp gate with one door half open and one door closed and I had to buy it. I could not find a similar coin on the internet. Have one of you seen one before? CONSTATINE II. Follis. 307-337 Ad. Rome mint (RS). Obv/ CONSTANTINVS AVG, helmeted and cuirassed bust right. Rev/ VIRTVS AVGG, Door ajar and second door closed in campgate with three turrets.; P - R, in ex. RS. Cat: RIC.176 var. (R4)? Bronze (Ae) 2,7g - 21mm Best, Adriaan
