Is this 1840-O Seated Liberty $1 supposed to exist?

    Hi,

I acquired this recently and am trying to learn more about it.

I've searched for info about this coin but everything I've seen says there were no 1840 Seated Liberty dollars minted at New Orleans(O).

Could this be fake/error or am I just not finding the right info? It's probably the latter.

    Thank you! IMG_2898.jpeg IMG_2899.jpeg

Hey, I've seen the Chinese make a Silver Eagle with a 1901 date, so why not?

Welcome to CT!!yes sadly your coin is a modern fantasy fake but still a pretty neat joke piece. The first year the Seated liberty dollars were minted at New Orleans was in 1846.

The "O" mintmark in this case probably means, "Oh, it's from Beijing."

That is obviously not a genuine coin both by its appearance as well as there were no 1840-O coins minted. Whether intended as a counterfeit or fantasy is unknown to me.

For your reference, the legitimate O-mint LS Dollar coins are 1846, 50, 51, 59, and 60.

I'd check it for silver. Ya never know, it may have been an attempt at a bullion coin?

I’d pay silver value just for fun!
Edit: I see op was one and done last night. Hope he doesn’t think that’s an offer to buy as he already acquired it

Unfortunately that just supports the counterfeiters. They sell these things for $2 so you know it costs them way less to make. If you pay $17 melt value for it, guess how much profit that is.

Maybe it’s a Dan Carr piece. Now how much?

Not a Carr fan but even if I was, it's clearly not his work. The date and mint mark look like garbage.

It's a counterfeit that has been made into an non-existent date and mint combination. The Chinese have done this numerous times. They have dies lying around and use a die pair that produces something that does not exist.

Here's another one. It's a 1904-CC Morgan Dollar. The Carson City Mint closed for good in 1893.

The first year of marriage for liberty seated dollar is 1840 and they were only made at Philadelphia. Total manage on the 18 Philadelphia issue of 1840 is 61,005. If you can send it back. It’s totally fake. Welcome to CT.
