Born in 1954 and with 7 brothers and sisters, my Dad's only hobby ( and therapy) was his gardening. He did not have any time to teach us a hobby. So we "made" our hobbies up as we went along. Better than that "free" time we seldom had getting eaten up by Dad saying, "Got some time on your hands? How about weeding another row in the garden". I chose coins and stamps and riding my bike as far away from the farm as possible when that free time became available. And that's how I learned about bottles and collecting them, by riding the old dirt roads and hiking in when I spotted an old foundation. I can say that we all grew up with a "Green Thumb" though.
You are not a weirdo! If you are, then I am also a weirdo and we all are on this site! I had a father and an older brother that were into coins so I learned about them at a young age. Then I spent a few decades not thinking about them at all. But now I am into them more than ever! It is a great hobby!
When I was a kid, if you were into coins or stamps and not sports, you were considered to be a geek ( and long before this term was applied to kids who got buried in their computers). Shame on them because those of us who have made it a life long hobby now have some pretty nice and valuable collections. And those sports "geeks" are now all fat, bald, old and penny less...( pun intended ). And probably still sitting in a sports bar getting drunk and bragging about their " bad old days" )
Thanks. And you're right. It's just that we're a small minority, but I think we'd agree a smart and positive one. I think that's awesome you were exposed and educated about them as a kid. I was just given some and nothing else. I got engaged by accident, selling them actually. I lost some good coins but at least the event sparked my interest that has never declined for about 5 yrs now
