It's one of the rarest to complete the set, and the Bowers Guide book has the price for a straight MS-60 at $22,000 and a 63 at $40,000. PL and DMPL have to increase the price alot so if the coin above has great qualities you can actually say it went 'cheap.' Even if I had the $$$, I am not sure I would have bid off those pics. Too much closeup, not seeing the light reflect. Not enough background/scale.
Curious...anybody ever tabulate the range of all the GSA MSDs submitted to the TPGs ? I wonder what the distribution of grades looks like.
62. Reverse is pretty clean, but the face has all those hits on the devices in prominent places. Any other Morgan but a CC would be a 60, or 61 with that amount of contact marks.
Nice coin. Great strike, with a very nice reverse. Obverse has some hits, but the cameo is certainly there. It looks like it might be close to PL, but hard to tell in the photo. I would say it looks 64ish--if the cheek were cleaner, it would be 65 league. The hit right in the middle of the cheek is fairly prominent, but nice coin.
Mostly agreed however I'm going 63+ tops on the coin. That said though, while we don't agree, I can see it in a 64 slab if the grader got some nookie the night before or a big auction house submitted it as I have seen worse in a pcgs 64 MD... look at the fields in front of the chin, behind the lower hair, on each side of the bird and all around igwt. Not to mention the cheek. Did you just glance at the pics estimating a possible 65? I do that sometimes too. I mean, 64 would surprise me a bit but not too much however a 65 would floor me. Even if heritage sent it in
No, not a 65 with the facial hits, especially the horizontal one. Far too much chatter on the devices for a 65, but I could see it as 64. I could see it as 63+ as you said, just as well. The cameo is nice, though. Sometimes, they overlook hits on CC dollars and give it a bump--I think this one would get the CC bump to 64, possibly.
What makes you say that coin is PL but mine above isn't ? I'm not talking about the extra bag marks, I know his is a cleaner coin. But tell me from the photos how you see PL potential in his but not mine. Trying to see what I am missing, thanks MD.
Thanks, I don't think it will get PL but if it gets 64 I'd be happy. If CCs get a bump, I think 78s in particular get an extra bump. As for the grade, here's my 63PL for comparison:
Now that 2nd MSD you have I can see more PL than my coin or yours....not seeing PL in your 1st coin vs. mine. I'm just going by appearance, not doing the Letter Measuring Thing, so who can say I guess.
Your coin is definitely not prooflike. I'll let someone more educated than me explain why. The first coin I posted is at least semi-prooflike, but NGC has been tough lately so I think they might not designate that one. But if they don't it missed it by a hair.
Truth be told, I think the two are very similar. Now, seeing them up there together, I would believe that they would grade the same. The second coin has a slight reflectivity advantage, but that cannot be accurately be judged by a photo, especially a straight on one. I would have to go on degree of cameo and contrast, and as I see it, they are pretty close.
