What do you think of this 1871 Indian head I just bought?

That doesn't look too bad for a filler coin. I'd say it grades somewhere between Poor-01 and Fair-02, so it's pretty darn slick, but at least it doesn't have any damage or corrosion or anything nasty like that. If that was all I could afford to fill that hole with, I reckon I'd have done that.

I'd give it a gentle rub with Vaseline and a paper towel to remove some of the grime. Not a hard rub, obviously. You want to leave the color intact. Just enough to get the scuz off.

I have acetone but I don't use it on copper. I think I will just leave it be and insert it into my Indian head book.

Next I think I will go for 1908-S and all I will need is 1877 and 1909-S

The forum server is slow. If you click "post reply" while you're waiting for the first reply to post, you'll get a double. Best to just wait it out when it gets delayed like that.

It's no big deal- happens to a lot of folks- but I have removed your duplicate posts now.

I'm collecting "filler" Indian cents, too, as it happens. With a twist. ;)

    BTW, here's my 1871 filler. :)

I think you did well as I was just looking at 1871 cents offered on the 'bay' and many grading less than yours were priced at double what you paid.
Perhaps when 'your ship comes in' you'll be able to upgrade!
    Cheers,

It has a sharp date, and for that reason, it grades at least Fair-2. The reverse is an AG-3.

I had similar thoughts about Fair-02 because of the clear date, but since I’ve seen certified PO-01 coins with clear dates, I hedged my bets there.

An Indian Head from the 70's is great in any grade!! Last year I started an Indian Head collection in EF-40 uncertified. The coins still look great, but they got out and circulated and did their job. I like that in a coin.

The coin came fast. I just bought it on Sunday and it came today. They gave me a bonus coin. It was no big deal but nice of them.

Yes, a little bonus coin is great - I used to do that myself when I was doing a lot of swaps and it created a lot of repeat customers. It shows you care, especially with a hand written letter included.

A small bonus, no matter how modest, is the mark of a seller with some class.

I am thinking about upgrading my 1867 and this seller has one for sale. My 1867 is not so good.

Is that the 1861 your are looking at? I'm kinda new at some coins. I wonder how much like that one would cost.

I am looking at a 1867 better than the 1867 I posted. It costs $45 for a good coin.
