I recently found my first teen date wheat back, a 1919 S. The coin has a rather large mark on Abe's shoulder, which appears to be a trail of luster, and also seems to be damaged. On a 1902 IHC i have, it has a tiny spot of luster on the tip of the shield, and another rather small scratch with luster visible. What could've caused this? I could post a picture later, if you think it will help.
I have this thing, and it looks like it has this thing on it. Could you guys tell me what it is? I'm just pulling your leg, of course, but seriously though; how can you expect anyone to help you, beyond a likely guess, from only your written description and without a photo? I can take a solid guess here and say that you, with all due respect, need to familiarize yourself with what luster actually is, and that what you're describing is probably the underlying fresh metal showing through, but wouldn't you like to know for sure? Take photos, then ask the question.
It's likely they are staple scratches, from what you are describing. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in the hobby: not pushing down staples in the cardboard holders, and on top of that, letting them move around all over each other. Another one is people who think using 2-3 staples in a holder will save them big
It sounds like you are describing lamination, however I cannot determine anything unless you post a picture.
Notice how the first post asked for pictures. No need for a posse. I will post pictures tomorrow, thanks for looking. Imagine luster but inside a scratch. I am familiar with luster, and something else.
Instead of reprimanding those who have at least paid your question undeserved attention, perhaps you should take the very clear point to heart. With all due respect, young man, your post proves, beyond any doubt, that you're not "familiar with luster" in the context of coins. To put it simply and very, very basically, "luster" on a coin is an artifact caused by striking and metal flow, and is not something that is magically revealed by a scratch. Congratulations on being familiar with "something else" though. Actually, even though you clearly don't need anyone's help and already know it all, please allow me to post something that may be of some help to you.. opps, I mean the other guy.
