I don't really buy that story. The only time they don't grade cleaned coins if you tell them not too. But they basically never offer to grade anything for free ever which is why I don't really buy that story. They wouldn't offer free grading because you selected the wrong option and forgot to include vouchers.
There is no actual math that works out to 350 for 5 coins from PCGS whether or not you include the membership or not.
You'll note that he didn't even bother to inform them that they were supposed to be free submissions....this is why you don't necessarily trust Yelp reviews, nor the first story you read here. I suspect once things are more fully explained, it will be clear what happened.
The one we're discussing was posted at 1:13 this afternoon. This is a place where necro threads are acceptable; you gotta roll with it.
Yeah, I didn't want to point that out to him at first but I'm thinking he just troll-dumped on us anyway
YELP=LOL!!! The OP was obviously still upset about not getting the grades he THOUGHT he should have gotten. I'm CERTAIN, just as the OP was, that those cleaned coins were MS65 or better, just like the OP thought, because the ebay seller he bought them from SAID they were!!! The seller probably used a 'stock photo', also (why list the actual coins when the seller can show a BETTER looking coin, add a disclaimer the imaged coin is NOT what the buyer will receive, get bids on the IMAGED coins....and 'why not' put up a stock image?... because MOST ebay buyers ALWAYS take the time to read EVERYTHING in the listing, so they KNOW what they're going to get, not to mention, they get that warm, fuzzy feeling of 'security' that a lot of slimy ebay sellers seem to be able to convey...where the hell are these buyers when I have coins listed??????). But, as the seller pointed out in the listing ".....these coins are all in the same, great condition as the coin imaged....", and further down the listing "...all sales final, returns accepted ONLY if the coin is not as described...image is representative of the quality of coin you'll receive...you won't get the actual coin imaged, as it's a stock photo.....IF there has been a listing error, we'll gladly accept returns..... ALL returns, even if it's because we screwed up, are subject to a 95% re-stocking fee". So, when the coins didn't come back graded EXACTLY as the seller stated, and exactly how the buyer/OP 'expected' them to grade (because, afterall, the OP became an EXPERT grader after just a few days of joining the hobby), and agreed wholeheartedly that the coins he purchased, and submitted, didn't come back exactly as the OP thought, well, it just HAS to be that PCGS is WRONG!!!!! After PCGS CHEATED him, the OP decided to come here and whine about it. First to YELP, then to a coin forum to LINK us to YELP, so we could not only see HIS brilliant, well-thought out, hissy-fit, but reviews from OTHER 'collectors?' who were 'duped', 'cheated', 'treated like crap', or any one of the other number of excuses newb's have when grades are received, ESPECIALLY if it's their FIRST EVER submission, and they don't quite agree with the TPG's assessment of his coins. I'm going WAY out on a limb here, and guessing the OP's grades weren't QUITE what he thought they SHOULD have been, and decided to come here to rant because: 1)the OP didn't get what he wanted 2)the OP didn't follow instruction, assuming he really DID submit (I don't) 3)the OP didn't get what he wanted 4)the OP thought the Min grade was what HE wanted for a grade 5)the OP didn't get what he wanted 6)the OP doesn't understand English, hence, couldn't follow instruction 7)the OP didn't get what he wanted 8)the OP thought that we'd agree with the consensus of YELP.. (snicker) 9)the OP didn't get what he wanted Whiners.....trolls....whiny trolls......hazards of the hobby (MOST of the above is purely hypothetical....but then again....)
I signed up with them online for $250 and they sent me a package to get started. They told me that I should've specified that i wanted my free ones first. DUH!! $50 for shipping was included in the $600. 3 of the 5 coins did not get graded due to the previous owner cleaned them. Wth does it matter if they have been cleaned or not. I just wanted all 5 graded.. but if they aren't going to grade them don't put them in a plastic ungraded case and charge me $50 each.
**I thought it was $50 but it was $60 each. I started out on their website. The platinum membership came with 8 free gradings. So i bought into it ($250 charged to card). They sent me the package with the free shirt and all. The sheet of paper didn't have a place on it that says check for "free ones" I sent the 5 coins in to them thinking that they could see that i signed up for the platinum membership and would go ahead and honor my first 5 of 8 free gradings. NOPE got them back and was charged $300+$50 shipping on my card. And only 2 coins were graded. Luckily the man coin 1916d was graded.
I sign up for the platinum plan each year. The packet they send me has a cert. that is good for 8 free grades. I send the cert. in with the form and the coins and only pay for shipping and insurance. You have to send the cert. in and use the 8 free grades, all at one time. It's all spelled out in the packet. The graders look at every coin and you pay for that even if the coin has a problem. They don't put grades on problem coins. It always works out well for me.
It also states the voucher does not work for express service and I believe errors and colonials are excluded as well. The regular tier was the highest you can use last time I checked.
This. You have to use ALL 8 at once on one order and you have to submit it with the certificate. The instructions are there on the certificate they mailed you. There are also some other restrictions. NGC used to do it like that, but now they just credit your account and apply it automatically. It's easier to use than their old cert, but also either a little better or worse depending on what type of material you're sending in. Either way it pays for itself.
On the bright side, the OP appears to still have some free grades coming. OP, it really behooves you to understand a little more about how the TPG process works before jumping in like this. It's only your own lack of knowledge of the process - including what is and isn't cleaned and what effect that has on the TPG's actions with the coin - which has made you this disappointed.
