I'm on the fence about sending this coin in to be graded at NGC. It's currently in a old anacs xf45, but NGC would crack it before it got graded. I think I've seen coins with toning like this, but if this comes back details I'd be throwing about $200 away as a details grade would kill the value.

    What do you think?

Not IMO, but it must be to ANACS as it is slabbed.

I think they would detail it , they are picky with color nowadays .

If it were me I'd leave it in the old ANACS slab.

I think it may straight grade in a cross. Most all 19th century coins were cleaned and retoned at some point. This one has nice eye appeal so I think it will straight grade. That said though I'd keep it in the old anacs slab. They're becoming more collectible and are known for accurate grading even by today's standards.

A lot of people like the small old ANACS slabs , me included so the value shouldn't be hurt by much if at all .

My gut says "Don't touch it." The lighter spots amidst darker color hint at a dip which wasn't completely rinsed followed by a retone, deliberate or not. The propagation pattern - darker in the middle of the fields than near devices - tends to support that. Not that it is clearly unoriginal, but the pattern is there.

What you have is graded and that grade can't be changed. Are you willing to take the change of anything less? If that coin were mine, I'd leave it as is.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

It has been dipped and retoned, but it is market acceptable.

The better question is - why would you pay the fees to have it crossed? If there is no strong reason for it, I say keep it as is.

Keep it as is.. I love the old small ANACS holders, they are starting to become popular and collectible in their own right. Eventually it may gain a premium for remaining in the original slab, as a lot of people I believe are cracking them in hopes of upgrading in PCGS or NGC plastic.

I truly wish CAC would sticker these older ANACS holders.

The way I see this Big Tee is this......I see you posting quite a few nice coins, and I seen some that are questionable . And what what I have determined is you're not a collector.
And not that there's nothing wrong with that.....
You're a flipper or dealer.......as it seems you're always asking what the collectors would do?
Longnine009 hit it on the head in his post . And the reason I post this now is that I have seen you post coins that were some high dollar varieties and you had no idea what you had......
Now the coin is your property to do as you please... however don't expect collectors serious collectors to be able to toss the dice for you.
I may be wrong on this one and if so please accept my apologies but I believe I'm spot on with this.....and there's nothing wrong with free enterprise or dealing in coins.
But don't ask for the opinions of many when all you want is one other to back up what you intended to do in the first place. It's a nice coin graded by Anacs as to what it is .....it's your money and your call . Roll the dice......
Funny thing I can't tell you how many collectors and dealers I know personally who walk a show looking for old ANACS slabs like yours and would not be afraid to buy it for market value if they so needed that coin.

Yes I do try and flip coins to pay for my hobby of collecting coins. Do I keep every coin I buy, absolutely not. Do I sell every coin I buy, absolutely not. I never thought there was anything wrong with buying and selling to try and expand my collection. I know I'm not the only one in here who does it, so I'm not sure why I'm being called out.

Is cointalk not a place where people can come and ask questions without a biased opinion as to why they're asking? I've already bought the coin and I don't have much experience in certain series and the way they tone. Some coins will tone different ways and I've seen seated dimes and quarters with similar toning. I'm not in expert and I'm not trying or pretending to be. I joined cointalk because I have a hobby which is coins. It just happens that I try and use my knowledge I've learned from CT and other resources to make my collection larger on a smaller budget. Is it so wrong to ask others who might have experience submitting coins of this nature to NGC or PCGS for their opinions? At the end of the day yes, it's going to be my decision, but making my decision based upon more than just my own opinion makes sense.

As far as posting coins with rare varieties and not knowing what I have, sure, that happens a lot. I'm guessing your referring to my 1883 V Nickel that you sent me a message about telling me it was a re-punch date or the 1866 Shield Nickel that was a certain variety. Honestly I don't care, I didn't pay up for a premium and if I don't have the book to reference, I'm not going to find that information. I have books for some of the seated series, Lincoln cents, bust half dollars, large cents, SLQ's, early silver dollars and a few others. Those coins that I have books for sure, I'll look. Not everyone is a variety collector...

You're only cheating yourself out of money on the flip - and missing cherrypicks - if you don't. :)

I'll never bother you about flipping. It's the only way I can afford to keep any at all.

Me I'd try it first as a cross at pcgs. If it doesn't cross you get it back in the old white holder. Nothing lost but the submission fees

The toning looks a bit washed out in the pictures. I suspect it's a little more vibrant in hand. It's an attractive seated dime.

What would you like to do with this coin? If you want to sell it, than trying to get it in PCGS plastic is not a bad idea; however, like others have replied, there is still a lot of respect among collectors for coins in the old white ANACS holders. So to me, it depends on what you want out of this coin.

I can't say for sure it's a re-tone of an old cleaning. I suspect that's the case based on the uneven (small splotchy areas) toning.

Can you post some clearer pictures of the coin? Without that, I can't make up my mind whether it would upgrade or not. Based on what I'm seeing, I think XF45 is a very fair grade for the coin.
