If I were holding that, I'd be having some "happy" thoughts!

The dollar is what's rare. Only 5,500 were minted. On the reverse it has boldly detailed tail feathers on the eagle, where as the normal business strike does not. Not sure what they are currently going for but they have come down in price i believe. Keep the dollar and cent together. Maybe worth getting them grade in my opinion.

But not all of them have those details.

  6. I would send the Sac dollar to PCGS to encapsulate and grade it. TC

Can we see the reverse? Or would you have to disturb the packaging, in which case, never mind.

To see the reverse, you'd have to open the packaging. Personally, I agree with @TopcatCoin - I'd send it to PCGS/NGC for grading with the Cheerios label. Or I'd list it on eBay if I didn't feel like waiting...but either way, I would NOT open it.

I would not open it either. List it as is and let "them" fight over it. As Doug said, many of the $ are not the valuable type AND most bidders will not know that!

I think I have one of those in some drawer.
I'll search for it sooner or later.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies... I had it listed several years ago on ebay with a high reserve to try to stir some interest, but I had no real offers - just guys edited about why it was reserved... I tried to list it again, but ebay wants proof that it is certified/graded so it can sell in the high price range - and It has not been sent out so I can't re-list it.... Anyhow, I have no intention of opening it up or separating the penny and dollar...

I think a more accurate statement would be that only 5,500 were "provided" to the program since not all of the 5,500 provided were of the special reverse. The actual number of coins with those special reverse could very well be much lower than 5,500 pieces.

Put it on consignment w/a major dealer who attends "big" shows at an agreed to price for you when he sells it.

The dollars only valuable if it is actually a prototype reverse, I read somewhere that not of them were. There's supposedly some die characteristics on the front that can be used to ID it though.

Yes, I heard about that and from, what we are seeing through the packaging, we got the correct identifying marks....
