I bought this coin a couple of weeks ago even though I know these are as common as they come. But I like this example because of the added eagle above and the hound running in exerque. ILLYRIA, DYRRHACHIUM AR Drachm OBVERSE: Cow stdg. right, head turned, suckling calf left, ΞENΩN, eagle above, hound running right in exergue REVERSE: Double stellate pattern within double linear square with sides curved inwards, ΔΥΡ/ ΦIΛ/ ΛI/ AΥ Struck at Dyrrhachium, after 229BC as a Roman Protectorate 3.31g, 17mm BMC 131, 132 Please post your coins of Illyria or any other coin you wish.
Nice example bit better then most too. Apollonia, Illyria, Greece, (200 - 80 B.C.) AR Drachm O: APIΣTΩN (moneyer), cow left, head turned, suckling calf right. R: double stellate pattern within double linear square with sides curved inward. 3.2g 17.5mm
They are no less interesting for being common. Everything you could possibly want to know about these coins can be found at this very fine site by Gyula Petranyi. Here's one I found at NYINC that didn't stick around long...
Great coin @Bing... Unfortunately, I have no dirt! None in my collection, but the cow, eagle, and running dawgy are really cool.
Nice one, Bing... I really like the running dog. I'm a sucker for minor devices. Btw, I think the dating should read "after 229 BC". Mine is an obverse brockage.
that hound below is pretty awesome! i didn't have one until recently, just picked up a "vanilla" one...seemed kind of weird to not have at least one example of the type.
Nice coins! I want to get some silver ancients in my collection for fun but am not looking for the numismatic stuff. What do you suggest for the biggest silver ancient for the lowest premium?
Super cool OP-score, big brother ... I agree that the extra eagle and hound are definitely huge bonus-points (I'm totally jealous of that winner) I have my usual two examples to toss into your thread ... I don't have an eagle, but I do have a funky lookin' torch ... Oh, and like zumbly, I also have a neat brockage error ... ... great coins, fellas
Those are awesome coins! how much should i expect to pay for a common coin such as the ones depicted, with a fairly decent strike, and in a vf gade
Vcoins sellers currently have ~58 in their shops, with prices ranging from $23 to $250. CNG's archives show prices for the Illyria drachms they've sold.
What wonderful coins. I never knew that there was such diversity in these coins. Snakes, hounds, eagles, torches. I wouldn't have known. Thank-you. I only have the USUAL old boring ones. BMC 4. BMC 15.
I think you're approaching ancient silver from a modern perspective. Ancient silver prices have nothing to do with the spot price. They did not make bullion, commemoratives, and circulating issues at the same time. Again spot price doesn't matter, it's all numismatic.
