Its a lot of money....still. But then the coin is extremely rare/beautifull/exceptional quality.

Like I stated before, imagine the fun a guy like Trump could have. He could even afford Aureii from Balbinus/Pupienius/Gordian I/II/Uranius Antoninius/Saturninus/Clodius Albinus/Domitianus Alexander......forget politics.

 

The problem with acquiring aurei from Uranius Antoninus, Saturninus, and a number of others isn't price. So many coins aren't available at any price. Only time will draw them out of hiding.

Oh, and the plural of aureus is aurei. Denarius, denarii. As, asses. Dupondius, dupondii. Siliqua, siliquae. Quadrans, quadrantes. Cistophorus, cistophori.

 

I think you probably have more fun collecting that he would. Since you (and I assume all of us here) are restrained to varying extents in what we can spend it adds a level of excitement and pleasure in the hunt that someone who can buy anything does not get. There is a sense of danger to us in whether it will be too much, whether we won't be able to outbid our competition, whether we pay too much, etc. That adds excitement and enjoyment to the process. Wanting things that you can't have is also pleasurable.

If you can just buy anything that you want, it's gets mundane.

 

This is why the "big fish" in the market usually don't last for long. Sheikhs and movie stars come and go and generally don't stick around for all that long. There are some pretty major exceptions to this, of course!

 

Panzerman, if I was rich, I'd have a collection like yours!

 

Even with an unlimited budget, you can't always get the specific coins you want unless other collectors are willing to part with those coins. So for a true collector, an unlimited budget isn't always sufficient to amass the collection you're seeking.

Part of the enjoyment is (as mentioned elsewhere) the fun of the hunt, especially for ancients since these coins are generally unique.

 

Now, I know why I am poor! I keep spending all my $ on coins/banknotes! But we are all rich in knowing that we are part of the best hobby on the planet.

My other collecting passion, the tokens, there are many I want that I cannot find. I have to hope and wait one pops up. I suspect I'm waiting for a collector to retire or go to the great coin cabinet in the sky.

 

I don't think that the "price" of the coin makes "that" much difference, does it?

Does anyone know anything more specific about the OP coin? Would you bid half a million bucks on an apparently unique and unrecorded type? I'd need some serious provenance on that coin, going back to its discovery.

 

I like RR coins because there are many available. But if you want a specific coin, coin type or grade; waiting is involved. I find that more often with cast bronze. I can find pieces that I do not have, but predicting what might available is hard. I want a cast bar, or significant part of a bar. Time and stretching my budget a bit will be needed.

 

A question for all but especially the most wealthy among us: If you had to select your favorite ten coins and your most expensive ten coins, how much overlap would there be in those two lists? My most expensive coins are in my top 100 but not all in the ten. What makes a coin top on my list is hard to explain but it is not how many people would like the coin or how much they would pay. Certainly expensive coins tend to be nice but that is not the only or even main factor.

I agree with this. There's a fair amount of overlap in my top 10 between price and favoritism but it's far from identical. I tend to bucket my collection into "tiers" and several of the coins in my top "preference tier" are in my middle "price tier".
