I staple two sides and tape the bottom. If you ever want to remove the coin just, carefully, slit the tape. Its tough to get a scratch from a removed staple.
I prefer using a toothpick. It cuts through the mylar simply and easily and there is no chance of metal on metal contact/damage.
NGC is fairly lax. They prefer 2.5" x 2.5" flips for all coins, but they won't turn down ones in 2x2s. As for labeling, they will accept paper inserts in the flip pockets, or any other method. If you submit to NGC at a show, they will take the stack of flips for each order and write the order number on the top flip in the stack with a sharpie, then write the line number of each coin right on the flip. They tell you specifically not to use tape, so I wouldn't tape anything, including the paper insert.
This is also what I do. I simply puncture the window at one pin point, and then you can just push the coin through with very little effort. Certainly a lot safer than trying to remove the staples.
That's what I started with years ago. First I was taught a knife point, then the method became easier with an X-acto. Fortunately, after me and several of my mentor dealers found that on occasion we nicked a coin, I convinced them to use the safety pin method. I don't wish you any bad luck but you'll see for yourself...
The plastic itself is not the issue. There is a very high chance that foreign matter will get into the plastic (dust, grit, etc), and that is what will do the damage. The coins themselves are also likely dirty (unless you've freshly dipped them....), and may contribute to this problem. I've seen coins damaged from the grit embedded in plastic, several times. I have also seen coins damaged by staples, as they were removed from 2x2s, more times than I care to count. Every storage method has its hazards, and should be considered before use.
I guess I should have qualified my statement. The X-acto knife works well when there is a reasonable gap between the perimeter of the coin and the inside edge of the cardboard 2x2. Obviously, if it is a tight fit, another method would be needed. In that case, I don't care for anything that punctures the mylar. I would rather use a pair of scissors and cut the cardboard between the staples and the window. Chris
Trouble getting a coin out of a flip flop? Nudge it out with the wooden end of a Q-tip bearing on one side of the coin.
I've never used NGC so I can't say. ANAC has no problem with accepting flips with inserts. They throw everything away at the end anyways. As an add, If I (had) a pet peeve it would be that they require flips for high grade coins in OGP. I've often wondered how many I sent in that came back as PF69 might have been 70's if not maybe for some rub from being in the flips during transit. And yes, I understand the liability involved with opening plastic cases but they (are) supposed to be professionals. I really would not mind if they took extra time in the processing of my order. But oh well, such as it is, not really peeved about it I guess.
There is at least one major TPGS that takes submissions in anything! I shall not name it as I have been accused of "shilling" for them. It is too bad we cannot give the pluses and minuses of NGC, PCGS, ICG, SEGS, and ANACS (I don't care about any others) without stirring up those who never use one or the other. IMO, they all have their good points. For example, this week I read on one forum that ANACS does an interesting and important Kennedy 50c variety that the others don't recognize. Today, on the NGC forum, a collector posted a 1928 Peace dollar that ICG conserved for free! And no one can argue that PCGS coins usually sell for more money than the others. I want to know everything about EACH TPGS in order to make informed decisions about who gets my money and when. PS Sorry but I've never heard of ANAC. Perhaps it is one of the services that try to claim legitimacy by copying a few letters used by one of the top four!
@Insider, I think there would be interest in a comparison like you mention. The problem is, anyone (everyone) who writes on the subject approaches it with some bias. Even in your post above, there is bias. I am biased towards NGC and against ANACS, I'll freely admit that (and I'll admit that there are some things ANACS does well). A truly unbiased study and comparison of the TPGs (well, at least the top four - I would not include SEGS) would be an interesting and informative project.
I AM BIASED. Overall, NGC is my favorite! However, I can give you some negatives about NGC along with all the pluses. It is natural to have favorites based on experiences. I think this might make a good thread ONE DAY. I'm not starting it Anyway, I for one can have honest opinions about each TPGS - BACKED UP BY FACT and still favor one (NGC) over the others. For example IMO _____ & _____ have TERRIBLE customer service as compared to _____. See?
Tommy, NGC does accept submissions in the OGP and does not charge for their removal. They also accept flips with the inserts. I've submitted coins both ways. Chris
