I once posted two, in-depth restaurant reviews I personally wrote, one good review, one bad review, both were rejected. I was told that the reviews were "obviously written by a computer". o_O

I have never bothered to write a review since.

Have you ever had a cat scan to verify you are not a computer? You could very well be a robot of some sorts. Now that I know yelps discriminatory stance on robots, I will not be using their services.

Personally, I think that a lot of the blame for the fiasco at the ANA Chicago should be on PCGS. But, the fact that people were paying such high premiums just based on a different label for their slab, and that all the complaining went towards the ANA, coin dealers, and anyone else involved other than the slabbers shows me that their reputation is quite solid in the industry.

I agree with this, but I think it's grading and offering insurance on the value that is the true basis of the conflict of interest.

If someone is grading a coin and backing up that grade with an insurance on the value, they are always going to err toward a lower grade when they are on the fence. This tendency creates more undergraded coins than it creates overgraded ones, skewing the normal distribution of grades.

It doesn't seem right to have a fee if one of those coins later upgrades, but what happens without this fee? You would end up with a lot more people sending coins in for regrading. It costs money to regrade, and there's still the disincentive to upgrade a coin due to the value guarantee. The fee is therefore a balancing incentive to allow for it to be graded more liberally. Having said that, it seems fairer to not offer a regrade without a crackout prior to resubmission due to the perceived conflict of interest.

For a conflict free TPG we would need one that only authenticates, grades, and protects a coin without any value guarantee. You would just be paying for professional conservation and grading services. They would have to charge less for the service, and a lot more problem coins would get slabbed (hopefully accurately) as a result. ANACS fills that role right now to a degree. The problem is, would you trust the grading of a TPG that didn't back their grades up with a guarantee?

We already have numerous graders who grade but do not insure. Igc, segs, acg, gcgs, ani, nnc, nes, wcg, unc, nga, sgs, and pgs.

Let me know how open you are to purchasing these coins. I have never seen them at a show, and if they were there they certainly are not in the majority. Please let me know how open you are to buying them feel free to reexamine the samples I posted above I believe there is even a coin dealer that posts here with a wide selection of these slabs that he can offer you

No, you're not. I wouldn't rely on Yelp for anything. After the stories I've heard and read, I won't even go to Yelp.

"they all seem legitimate to me except one where they guy was complaining about his high-value coins coming back cleaned."

If I read correctly, he didn't send in the coins a third party sent them in.
I would never let a third party send in my coins for grading.
Maybe the coins that were returned were not the ones he sent in.

I trust most YELP reviews for restaurants. For reviews of top graders I'd check numismatic sources, if I needed reviews (which I don't).

I'd like to see some of the OP coins. I bet most are grossly overgraded.

Go to the bank and get some!

And if it isn't your "JOB" to be consistent, stop whining about the "relative" consistency of those whose job it is. Put yourself in their shoes! Give it your best shot! Especially if you are going to "judge" them on what "you think" you know and then "voice" that judgment with relatively little authority on the matter.

The bottom line is that you really don't have a clue yet you're calling the company that DOES have a clue, a sham.

This song was on the hit parade back in 2005.

And its not a new hit.

People just like to disguss how "they" would run a large business if they had the opportunity.

    Sour Grapes.........

Q: "What stops PCGS from purposefully undergrading all raw coins?"

A: "Integrity and Respect within the Industry"

Reading comprehension seems to escape you. I said that the reconsideration and crossover services are a sham. That is an opinion I am entitled to, so kick rocks. I never said anything about the company as a whole -- just highlighted some of their unethical and odd practices.

Is PCGS paying you or something? Good grief, take a chill pill.

You cannot say "sham" out of one side of your mouth without speaking about the integrity of the entire company.

Wow, for anyone that thinks the reviews look legit, look at the words/wording being tossed about...

    "....my coin mysteriously upgraded"

".....it has a manufacturers error in it"

    ".....rated an MS65"

".....I was going to join, but after talking to them..." (who the hell talks to a TPG before joining???)
"....the more expensive ones were CLEANED...)

    ".....PCGS misidentified my coin"

"....PCGS is too rigid about grading coins not on their 'list'"
    (what freakin' list???)

Need I go on (there's still more)??? Do these people REALLY sound like users of a grading service, let alone know anything about coins, grading, the hobby even LOOSELY??? Sorry, but anyone who thinks ANY of these 'reviews' is legit, well, perhaps you should back away from the keyboard and take pause about the hobby, before purchasing any more coins for awhile.

    Seriously, though......YELP.....REALLY????? C'mon!!!

I signed up with PCGS this month. I had 5 dimes that I wanted to be graded. I paid the $250 membership with the understanding that I get 8 FREE grading. I got my coins back yesterday along with a $349.95 bill. Three of the coins were not graded. I called them and asked about the ungraded coins and the $349.95 bill. They told me I was charged because I didn't request to use the free ones, and the three wasn't graded because they had been cleaned. They did offer to not charge for four but still going to charge for one.
What kind of company are they running???

$350 bill? They charge your credit card before they ship the coins back. And you need to submit the coupon they mail you with the membership package to get the 8 free grades.
