I recently upgraded my Justinian follis with an unexpected ebay find. With the coin in hand I am doubly impressed, there is just no way in pictures, I can show you how awesome thing coin is. You are going to have to use your imagination.

The planchet is nothing less than humongous and wasteful. In the 12 th year of Jusitinian's reign he introduced one of the most majestic coins ever struck. It was produced to weight of 22 grams, for a few years before being reduced in size in AD 542, the decline of the Justinian's follis was both rapid and permanent.

Don't make him any madder than he already is...

    Byzantine Empire
    Anatolia, Nikomedia
    Justinian (r. AD 527 - 565)
AE Large Module Follis (40 nummi)
    43 mm x 23.78 grams
Obverse:Helmeted and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right - DNIVSTINI ANVS PP AVC
Reverse: Large M; cross above, date across field; ANNO left field, X/II/I right field - NIK in ex.
    Ref: SB 201
Note: Dated yr. 13 (AD 539/40), Large planchet. Superb. Gorgeous perfect Green patina, slight doubling of the "M"

Yes, it's great. If it's bronze, it has to be BIG*

(*unless it's a very rare emperor I can't get in a BIG size)

No doubt they were trying to impress when they made these coins. Excellent example.

This coin is so neat I just had to make a second post. It prompted me to crack open a couple of books about Byzantine coins I had sitting on my bookshelf being neglected. Thank you for sharing your Byzantine 'biggie' and inspiring me to learn something new today.
