I recently upgraded my Justinian follis with an unexpected ebay find. With the coin in hand I am doubly impressed, there is just no way in pictures, I can show you how awesome thing coin is. You are going to have to use your imagination. The planchet is nothing less than humongous and wasteful. In the 12 th year of Jusitinian's reign he introduced one of the most majestic coins ever struck. It was produced to weight of 22 grams, for a few years before being reduced in size in AD 542, the decline of the Justinian's follis was both rapid and permanent. Don't make him any madder than he already is... Byzantine Empire Anatolia, Nikomedia Justinian (r. Ref: SB 201 Note: Dated yr. 13 (AD 539/40), Large planchet. Superb. Gorgeous perfect Green patina, slight doubling of the "M"
'Noob' I agree with Zumbly and all the other posts.... I would LOVE to own that gorgeous Byzantine coin---43 mm and 23 grams and wonderful devices WOW!! it's a shame that's the exception of the type.
Yes, it's great. If it's bronze, it has to be BIG* (*unless it's a very rare emperor I can't get in a BIG size)
Not a follis but here's the most impressive of my forward-facing coins of Justinian: Justinian, Byzantine Empire AV solidus Obv: D N IVSTINI-ANVS P P AVG, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing, holding cross on globe and shield Rev: VICTORI-A AVGGG delta, angel standing facing, holding P-headed cross and cross on globe, star in right field Mint: Constantinople (Mintmark: CONOB) Ref: SB 140 Size: 20.75 mm, 4.49 gr.
This coin is so neat I just had to make a second post. It prompted me to crack open a couple of books about Byzantine coins I had sitting on my bookshelf being neglected. Thank you for sharing your Byzantine 'biggie' and inspiring me to learn something new today.
All I have to offer is my loyal ol' pizza-coin (merely a large pizza) ... => run along, pizza-coin (but keep your head-up, for the new kid looks like he's a bit of a bully!!) Justinian I AE Follis Date: Year 32 (558-559 AD) Diameter: 30.7 mm Weight: 17.3 grams Obverse: Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian I, holding globus cruciger and shield Reverse: Large M
