I brought this topic up back in December regarding a possible new DDR 1913-D Type 1 Buffalo Nickel. Well I contacted James Wiles about sending him the nickel to examine and he suggested I wait until after the holidays to send it to him. Well I got busy and did not send it to him until a couple weeks ago. I just checked the mail and in it was a returned package from him. Inside was a letter confirming my suspicion. It is indeed a new discovery and will be listed as DDR-001. 1-R-IV+VIII, stage A, EMDS. I'm so thrilled to have made a new discovery, this is a first for me. Here are pics again for those of you who don't want to hunt down the old thread.
Thanks guys.. Now I'm trying to determine the best TPG service to send this to to get the "Discovery Coin" annotation. Any suggestions? I have the letter that James Wiles sent back with the nickel.
There might very well be a 1913-S with the same doubling. This one appears to be pretty much identical to the 1913 Type 1 DDR-002, 2-R-IV+VIII which could mean that the working hub was possibly doubled and may have created both of the working dies with the exact same doubling. Considering that Philadelphia created all of the dies and shipped them to the branch mints, the possibility of an S mint marked coin with the same doubling could be likely.
Great find and cool looking coin. There's some interesting toning on that nickel! I like it a lot. Just checked my 13-D T1, and all I could see was some very minor MD on the motto.
Thanks, The toning is what attracted me to the coin in the first place. It was a toss up between it and a Philly Type 1. I noticed the doubling in the Motto of the Denver, so I bought it. Coincidently the Philly Type 1 finally came home with me.
