This attractive but less than perfect tetradrachm immediately caught my eye and 'spoke to me'. Despite some stiff competition, I was able to win this coin at less than estimate but rather close to retail for the type and grade---but I simply couldn't resist it!

To quote Forum: "This type is a wonderful blend of Roman and Macedonian/Greek devices---apparently intended to encourage Macedonian pride by portraying the legendary national hero of the Macedonians, at the same time clearly communicate 'Roman Authority' with the name and symbols of the Roman Quaestor."

Thus far, I've been unable to discover very much about Aesillas himself......and the date struck varies greatly between the mid 80's to early 60's BC, although the 'consensus' for this particular Tet seems to be circa 94-88 BC.

AR Tet of Aesillas as Quaestor, 95-70 BC,
    Struck 93-92 BC, Thessalonika mint
Diademed head of Alexander the Great in the horn of Ammon
    MAKEDONON
Money chest (cista), club and Q above chair all within wreath
    AESILLAS
    SNG COP 1330, 15.6 grams, 28 mm

Beautiful examples posted so far. I don't have any silver from Roman Macedon(though I hope to add an example of the Aesillas type this year) but I do have the following bronze, currently the only coin in the "Provincial Coins of the Republic" section of my collection:

    Combined.JPG
Macedon under Roman Rule, Æ22(10.65g). Gaius Publilius, Quaestor, 168-167 BC. Head of Roma(or hero Perseus?) right, wearing winged helmet terminating at the top in the head of a griffin. Border of dots / ΓΑΙΟΥ ΤΑΜΙΟΥ ΠΟΠΛΙΛΙΟΥ in two lines within a wreath of oak-leaves. Above, monogram. Line border. MacKay, "Bronze Coinage In Macedonia, 168-166 BC," ANSMN 14 (1968), pp. 5, pl.III, 2; SNG Copenhagen 1320.

Anyone have any good references or websites for provincial types of the Republic? It seems like they usually get lumped in with other Greek coins but I'd love to find a good reference specifically on the provincial types of the Republic(i.e., everything minted under Roman authority but not covered in Crawford).

Today I picked up another of the fascinating and scarce bronzes of Roman Macedon and thought I'd share here. I will probably make a longer post once I've got the coin in and have had more time to do research(and re-research the one above) but as a teaser, these types become much more interesting when viewed in the context of the Macedonian wars, the Silenus type posted above by TIF, the various types struck by Publilius and the known overstrikes within this small series, and I've actually had to update my ID for the one posted above based on the results of preliminary research on this one:

    RomaeAeternaepic.jpg
Macedon under Roman Rule, Æ21(9.17g). Lucius Fulcinnius, Quaestor, 167 BC. Head of Roma(or hero Perseus?) right, wearing winged helmet terminating at the top in the head of a griffin. Border of dots / ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ ΤΑΜΙΟΥ ΛΕΥΚΙΟΥ ΦΟΛΚΙΝΝΙΟΥ in three lines within a wreath of oak-leaves. Above, monogram. Line border. MacKay, "Bronze Coinage In Macedonia, 168-166 BC," ANSMN 14 (1968), pp. 6-7, pl.III, 7; BMC Macedonia 80.

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

those are awesome, great new coin MZ...great style, cool little coin chest..awesome.

i don't have anything that really fits here, but this is either philip v or perseus...so one of the last coins before roman rule (maybe as late as 168 BC).
