Public forum, posting opinions about something is generally what is done on public forums. Attacking people for it is usually a standard child's response. I never said the guy was a fool for liking it, you must've read that into it yourself, i said what i would do if i had the spare cash to buy that holed monstrosity.
Trolling? i saw a thread about a holed coin, and responded with an honest opinion, how's that trolling?
just maybe a rich person could buy this coin at like four grand, build up hype and say that John Lennon or Elvis owned it and unload it on e bay for triple the amount
What do expect the responses to be when you say you want to blow torch a rare and value coin with historical significance for ANY reason. It show a crass lack of numismatic integrity and will be admonished by most true numismatists. Did you really think you'd get responses lime "cool" or "do it" etc? It's not a cull morgan for crying out loud. But hey, go ahead and dig in and see how blown up this thread gets
sure, why not. IF i had a spare 5 grand lying around, i would buy that coin and melt it, just because of my aversion to holed coins. I've said that once before and i'll say it again. I didn't realize the emotional response it would trigger in some other members. if you want to fume and sputter and "see how blown up this thread gets", by all means, have at it.
Really shouldn't have been shocking that that happened. Its a rare coin in any condition, melting because you can is a pompous move to put it lightly. Normal people would just not by it if they didn't like it, not go out of their way to destroy it. It's one thing to make some money melting culls at least people can see the financial reasons behind it, turning 4 figure coins into 15ish dollars of silver because you can is just being a jerk
Maybe so, but whoever put that hole in it is a lot bigger jerk, in my opinion. I think that coin was lost to us when the hole was made.
If you click on a person's name, there is a button that says "ignore." That person's posts don't even show up in a thread anymore, unless you choose to "show ignored content."
Well I guess the hobby can be thankful that @atcarroll doesn't have enough money to buy up and destroy historic coins because someone holed them.
I disagree, while a hole isn't ideal the rest of the coin has a fairly pleasing look. The hole is also off to the side and not right through the head of liberty which is as good as it gets for holes. I'd rather have a holed coin with a decent look than one that looks like a lawnmower got a hold of it or was cleaned with a wood chipper. Worse things can happen then someone making jewelry with it during contemporary times. The coin may be lost to you, but that hole also gives a lot of other people a chance to be able to afford something that would have been out of their budget otherwise
Although I keep hoping to find a valuable coin in my father's batch of old coins, I'm also intrigued with the history of circulated coins and am not put off with a hole in a coin. That's part of its history, and the Gobrecht is attractive as it is, and very rare. Would you reject a Winslow Homer seascape that had a tear in its canvas?
